If He Ever Winds Up in Hollywood Talmudic Tales

By DAVID MORANTZ

(Based upon the ancient legends and
philosophy found in the Talmud and
folklore of the Jewish people.)

An important legal document
came to Rabbi Judah Hanasi for
his consideration and, on read-
ing it over, he found many mis-
takes therein.
Looking at his son, Simon,
who was a scribe, ' he asked:
"Didst thous write this?"
"Nay, my father," replied the
son, 'it was written by Chayta."
"Thou shouldst not have said
that, my son," returned the
father. "It would have been
enough to say that thou didst
not write it, but the additional
information, which thou gayest,
incriminated another, which was
not necessary, and which would
be accounted slander."
Says the Talmud further on
the subject:
"Rather let others slander you,
than that you should - slander
others."
"I need never look around
when speaking of another to see
whether he is present," said
Rabbi Jose, "as I never say any-
thing in a- man's absence that I
would not have said in his pres-
ence."

Tisha b'Ab, 5703

Tisha b'Ab remains a tragic day on our calendar, and
for millions of homeless, starving Jews, observance of this
day, on Tuesday, will be further reminder of the miseries
imposed upon Israel.
But Tisha b'Ab also carries with it hope for a better
day, and the ninth of Ab of the year 5703 gives greater
assurance of the coming of peace and security than we have
had in a decade.
On this day we shall surely see further evidence of the
beginning of the end of the miseries imposed upon mankind
by tyrants : whose clOorn is approaching.
On Tisha b'Ab, we may well think of the Arch of Titus,
in Rome, not as a symbol of the . destruction of Jerusalem
and Jewry, but as the evidence of defeat for bigots and
despots who seek to enslave their fellow-men.
-A better day is coming, on which we may entertain
the hope that Tisha b'Ab - shall be turned into a day of joy
rather than ;mourning, in celebration of the liberation of
all oppressed peoples of the earth.

The Race Riots and the Jews

The Nazis and 'Compassion'

The Office of War Information quotes a -Nazi paper as
warning the German public against yielding to the Jewish
spirit—Judengeist—by showing such qualities as "magnan-
imity, gallantry and compassion."
The quoted newspaper analyzed Nazi ideology, asserted
that there still is something of "the Jewish spirit" in the
hearts of the Germans, and added: "Do we realize we occa-
sionally approach this madness when we let ourselves be
'guided by weak, soft feelings of a vague sort of 'humanism'?"
This type of thinking also was expressed by the Nazi
newspaper Storm in Holland, in an attack on Jewish artists
whose works it called "worthless." Among those whose works
are attacked are Joseph Israels and his son Isaac, Mendes de
- Costa, Jesserun de Mesquita and others.
These are consistent Nazi manifestations. You can't ex-
pect the world's most destructive elements to approve of
great art or to condone "compassion."
But when the time comes for them to cry for mercy, it
is a certainty that they will appeal to the "Judengeist"
which will guarantee them "magnanimity, gallantry and
compassion."
In the meanwhile, the Nazis appear to have become
frightened by the acquisition of "soft feelings" of "human-
ism" by their own people. It is one of the evidences of the
fast-approaching breakdown of the Nazi rule of terror. There
is no doubt that victory is near for the democracies.

The current issue of the Protestant Magazine carries
ari editorial by 'Rev. Claude Williams, who has been widely
quoted as an authority on the race situation in. Detroit.
Writing under the heading "The Real Meaning of betroit-
The Story Is One of Enlistment for American Fascism,"
Rev. Williams makes the following statement:
"Even the Jewish lads (also of an oppressed minority)
Were enlisted in the riot here with the white hoodlums;
and that in spite of the fact that a whispering antiSemitic
and pamphlet campaign raged through the plants among
the white workers, Jewish stores were destroyed right beside
unmolested non-Jewish white stores."
There are many explanations offered for the destruction
of Jewish stores, and the 'widespread looting of Jewish
property deserves to be severely condeinned and could
stand investigation. But. Rev. Williams should prove the
charge that "Jewish lads were enlisted in the riot." It is a

Our

CHILDREN'S
CORNER

Dear Boys and Girls:
From sunset on Monday until
sunset on Tuesday, our people
everywhere will observe the fast
of Tisha b'Ab.
Here are some faCts . you
should know:
Tisha b'Ab.. commemorates the
destruction of the First and Sec-
ond Temple in Jerusalem, 2,529
years ago and 1873 years ago.
The day is traditionally spent
in fasting, and there is tradition
of visiting graves of relatives on
that day.
The Prophet Jeremiah, whose
Lamentations are read on that
day, is associated with the fast
day.
"Kinoth" is the Hebrew name
for Lamentations.
The Western Wall, known as
the Wailing Wall, is the only
evidence left of the destroyed
Temple.
May this be the last sad Tisha
b'Ab and may •we soon see re-
demption for Israel in Palestine
and freedom for all Jews every-
where throughout the world.
UNCLE DANIEL.

By the Rivers of Babylon

By LORD BYRON
We sat down and wept
by the waters
Of Babel, and thought of the
day
When our foe, in the hue of his
slaughters;
Made Salem's high places his
prey,
And ye, 0 her desolate daugh-
ters!
Were scattr'd all weeping
away.
While sadly we gazed on the
river
Which roll'd on in freedom
below,
They demanded the song; lotit,
oh, never
That triumph the stranger
shall know!
May this right hand be wither'd
for ever,
Ere it string our high harp
for the foe!
On the willow that harp is sus-
pended,
0 Salem! its sound should be
free;
And the hour when thy glories,
ended
But left me that token of thee;
And ne'er shall its soft tones be
blended
With; the voice -Of the -spoiler
by me!
