Viscount Cranborne Declares Jews Will Be Given Places
On Intergovernmental Committee; Lord Davies
Doubts Legality of White Paper
LONDON, July 29 (Palcor)—In answer to a sharp attack
on the British government for its Palestine policy, which was
termed by Lord Davies "the last installment of appeasement,"
Viscount Cranborne, government spokesman in the House of
Lords, declared that only victory can bring a solution to the
problems of the Jewish people.
During his answer on behalf
of the government, Viscount
Cranborne disclosed that Jews
would be given places on the In-

Anniversary
U. S., British and Palestinian
Vets of First World War
Meet in Palestine
JERUSALEM (JPS-Palcor)—
The 25th anniversary of the ar-
rival of the First Judeans, the
first American and British Bat-
talions in Palestine, which later
wrere joined' by Palestinians, was
celebrated here at a two - day
rally of the Association of Jew-
ish War Veterans of the First
World War.
Among the speakers were Da-
vid ben Gurion, Chairman of the
Jewish Agency Executive, Isaac
ben Zvi, Chairman of the Vaad
Leumi; Bernard Joseph, legal
adviser of the Jewish Agency;
Eliahu Golomb, Histadruth
leader; Gershon Agronsky, edi-
tor of Palcor and of The Pales-
tine Post, and other prominent
members of the Yishuv, all of
whom are veterans of the First
Judeans.
Memorial references were
made to the late Lord Wedg-
wood, British Laborite peer and
ardent Zionist and friend of the
Jewish people, and to the late
Brig. Frederick H. Kisch, chief
engineer of the British Eighth
Army, who died in action in
Tunisia.
On the second day of the con-
ference the entire gathering
marched in a procession to the
Jewish section of the British War
Cemetery on Mount Scopus, led
by a military band of the pres-
ent-day Jewish Battalion. A spe-
cial broadcast. of the procession
from Jerusalem was arranged.
Dr. Elbogen Dies
NEW YORK (JPS)—Dr. Ismar
Elbogen, one of the greatest
Jewish scholars of the 20th
century, died here at Mount
Sinai Hospital at the age of 68.
Distinguished in almost .every
field of Jewish learning, he made
his greatest contribution in the
field of research in Jewish lit-
urgy:
The anti-Fascist film, "This
Precious Freedom," will soon be
issued by M. G. M. as a two-reel
special.

In July the sixth anniversary
of George Gershwin's death was
marked with many revivals of
his music — also with many
anecdotes of his life. Oscar Le-
vant, who knew him better than
anyone outside his family, tells
of the time he and George
travelled together to play in a
concert. George took it for
granted that the lower berth was
his. Comfortably ensconced, he
looked up at Oscar in the
heights and said, "You know this
picture represents the difference
between genius and talent!"
Noteworthy is the fact that Al
Jolson is playing a part in the
Gershwin film—gratis. He re-
fused any pay for the role . .
wanted to do it for old friend-
ship's sake.
During the research on the
Gershwin movie, it was discover-
ed that many of the composer's
original manuscripts belong to
the estate of the late Duke of
Kent, who was an ardent Gersh-
win admirer.

Milton has "berled" up a play,
"Happily Yours," which will go
into New York production short-
ly, and from which he expects to
make a movie later. Quips Mil-
ton: "That pay-as-you-go tax is
aptly named. After you pay it,
where can you go?"
