Optimists and Pessimists

Just before the downfall of
Benito - Mussolini, the following
version was given of conditions
in Italy:
The Italian population is now
divided into two sections, opti-
mists and pessimists. The opti-
mists say: "We shall certainly
lose the war," and the pessimists
retort: "Yes, but when?"
Now, it is said, all Italians are
optimists.

Preserving Hitler
The Gestapo raided a Jewish
home. They confiscated all valu-
ables, then examined the vic-
tim's papers. They picked up a
suspicious - looking notebook.
Turning to the first page, they
read:
"God Preserve Adolf Hitler!"
Astonished, one of the Gestapo
men said, "What a strange Jew!
So patriotic, despite all persecu-
tion."
He turned the page. On it was
written in large letters:
"God Preserve Joseph Goebbels!"
"I don't think the man is a
Jew," exclaimed the Gestapo
chief. They looked at page 3,
which said:
"God Preserve Rudolf Hess."
Below this statement was a
pencilled note:
"Preserved 10th May, 1941."

President of ZOA Declares
Proposal 'III-Advised
and Unrealistic'

DENVER — The proposal to
send Jewish refugees to areas in
Central Africa, as suggested by
Herbert Hoover this week, is "ill-
advised and unrealistic," said
Louis E. Levinthal, president of
the Zionist Organization of
America, in an address here.

board for unity in this critical
period, when there is an urgent
need for agreement in the for-
mulation of the postwar demands
of the Jews.
He expressed his regret at the
mood of "bitter partisanship"
which now prevails. Although
the Zionists have obtained ma-
jorities on all of the important
committees of the board, they
must contend with considerable
opposition emanating from the
anti-Zionist group and the Agu-
dists, he observed.

Jewish Soldiers Handed
Keys to Bishop's Palace

LONDON (JTA)—Pvt. Harry
Goldstein, of New York, can
claim the honor of being the first
Jew to whom the keys of an
ancient English Bishop's palace
have been surrendered.
Goldstein received the keys
this week in his capacity as
chairman of a soldier committee
which arranged the presentation
ceremonies at which the palace,
which is at Norwich, was turned
over to the American Red Cross
as a servicemen's club. The
building was erected in 1096.

"I prefer to recall an earlier
statement of Mr. Hoover," Judge
Levinthal said, "some 11 years
ago, when he expressed .his 'gen-
uine admiration' for 'the steady
and unmistakable progress made
in the rehabilitation of Palestine
which, desolate for centuries, is
now renewing its youth and vi-
tality through the enthusiasm,
hard work and self-sacrifice of
the Jewish pioneers.' It should
be recorded that these qualities,
of which Mr. Hoover then spoke,
have in the past dozen or more
years created in ,Palestine limit-
less opportunities for expansion
and increased economic absorp-
tive capacity, without displacing
a single Arab."

WASHINGTON (J P S) — A
clause which may have great
significance for post-war Jewry
ras pointed to by Jewish ex-
perts here with the publication
of the full text of the draft agree-

tration.
It is believed that the use of
the phrase "return of exiles to
their homes" as one of the ob-
jectives of the UNRRA might
give a clue to the use of inter-
governmental funds for the re-
habilitation of the shattered
Jewish communities of Europe.
The reference is contained in
the preamble to the agreement,

war settlement were taking shape and "among these, the
question of European Jewry is one connected with the
origins of the war and tragically aggravated by its course.
It is idle to expect the remnants to feel safe in Europe even
after liquidation of the Nazi rule.
"The problem of Palestine per se also is on the postwar
agenda. The attempt to solve it by the White Paper of 1939
under the strains and stresses of that hapless period must
be relegated to the limbo of the appeasement era. A new
solution is called for, conceived in a spirit of comprehensive
responsibilities and resting upon leading United Nations.
"The new policy must aim at making the utmost of
Palestine for a solution of the Jewish problem and paving
the way for large-scale development of the Middle East."

Armed Clash Predicted

In a follow-up cable from Cairo, Mr. Sulzberger states
that Palestine faces an Armed Arab-Jewish clash after the
war, and he declares that outbreaks are unlikely as long as
Allied forces remain on guard in the mediterranean area.
Mr. Sulzberger states in his cable that Arabs and Jews
are prepared for an outbreak. He says that Arabs have hid-
den 80,000 rifles and ammunition and Jews 30,000 rifles and
ammunition, and he further states that the return of 20,000
Jewish men and women who are now in the British armed
forces will strengthen the Jewish position.
The New York Times correspondend pointed out that
the Jewish middle class elements and the Socialists favor
only defensive methods, whereas the Revisionists advocate
offensive means and an attack on Arab quarters in the event
of trouble.

Germans
Won't Leave
Palestine

They'd Rather Remain There
Than Be Exchanged for
Jews in Germany

TEL AVIV (JTA)—German
settlers in Palestine who were
interned as enemy aliens after
the outbreak of war are refusing
to be exchanged for Palestinian
citizens interned in the Reich,
and have expressed the desire
to remain in isolation camps
here rather than to be repatri-
ated to Germany.

A poll taken by the Spanish
Consul, who is protecting the in-
terests of German nationals in
Palestine, established that the
German internees prefer to
await the end of the war on
Palestine soil.
