Jewish Paratroops
Seize Sicily Towns

Capt. Rogoff
Takes Family
East to Live

Notices are being received of
heroic roles being played by Jew-
ish soldiers in Sicily and have
been given prominent mention
by noted radio commentators.
Stories of how Jewish boys
helped capture towns and whole
companies of Axis soldiers are
told by various world news agen-
ices. Two instances told how
paratroopers Lt. David Rosen-
crantz and Pvt. A. Griebstein
landed in Sicily hours before ad-
vancing infantrymen.
Lt. Rosencrantz and another of-
ficer landed in an open field and
before they could shake the dust
off their uniforms a whole com-
pany of Italian soldiers came up
to them and surrendered. Pvt.
Griebstein and Ed Borycz of De-
troit landed in another area and
after killing four of the enemy
the others surrendered.
Capt. Samuel Lerner, of Lon-
don, Ont., was with the first
troops to land in Sicily. He is
serving with the Canadian gen-
eral staff in charge of operations.
He is the son of David Lerner,
prominent member of the Labor
Zionist movement in Canada and
well-known government arbitra-
tor in labor disputes.

Abolish Racial Legislation
LONDON (JTA)—All Italian
legislation discriminating against
persons because of race, creed or
color will be annulled in the
sections of Sicily held by the
Allied forces, the press here re-
ports on the basis of dispatches
from Allied headquarters in
North Africa.
Abolition of racial laws will be
one of the first steps taken by
Gen. Sir Harold R. L. G. Alex-
ander, who has been named
military governor of Sicily, ac-
cording to these dispatches.
which also state that freedom of
religious worship for all people
will be upheld and the position
of all religious institutions will
be respected.

Synagogues Give Prayers
For Allied Victory
GENEVA (JPS) — Special
prayers for an Allied victory
were conducted in the syna-
gogues of Cairo, Alexandria and
Tripoli on the inauguration of
the campaign in Sicily, accord-
ing to reports reaching here.
Many Jewish members of the
British armed forces participat-
ed in the services.

Correction in Pamphlet:
Lachowitcher Gave $600
In the pamphlet by the late
Samuel D. Weinberg recently
issued by the Jewish Welfare
Federation, entitled "The War
Chest for 1943," in which is de-
scribed the participation of Jew-
ish Organizations in the 1943
War Chest and in which appears
a list of the organizations and
the amounts of their gifts, the
Lachowitcher Aid Society is
listed as contributing $250. The
Federation regrets this error in
printing, as the War Chest grate-
fully acknowledges the gift as
$600.

SUNDAY EVE., AUG. 1, 7 P. M.
at the MASONIC TEMPLE

For more than two years, the Soviet people and the courageous Red
Army by their sacrifices and valor held the fort .against Hitler's
hordes. The mighty battles of Leningrad and Moscow—the immortal
defense of Kiev, Odessa and Sevastopool—the encirclement and annihila-
tion of 330,000 of Hitler's crack troops by the magnificent Red Army
at Stalingrad—these epic deeds have turned the tide for humanity
and have paved the way for the complete destruction of the fascist
axis by the United Nations.
