To say that Sheldon Selesnick
won an honor would only be
repitition because' he's won so
many, that it has ceased to be
of important news value. But the
type of honors he wins are such
that simply cannot be ignored.
This time, Sheldon has really
rung the bell, and his graduating
class at Central High, of which
he is president,
is mighty proud
of him! With an
all - A average,
Sheldon was
awarded the
high distinction
diploma, and the
finest of all
prizes—a W a r
Bond—was pre-
sented to him
for being one of
S. Selesnick the two students
with the highest average in sci-
ence.
. . Two months ago, with 10
schools competing, Sheldon put
another cup in Central's trophy
case when he walked off with
the city-wide oratorical contest,
sponsored by. the Century of Pro-
gress Club. There was also $15
in it for him, too. Last year he
1,von the Harvard Book Prize for
Scholarship and was the speaker
at Central's Memorial Day ser-
vices.
As master-of-ceremonies at the
class-day exercises, day before
graduation, Sheldon handled the
535 - graduates like a veteran!
A leader in A.Z.A., Sheldon is
a charter member of Northwest
Chapter of A.Z.A. and was its
president for three terms. In De-
cember, he won the A.Z.A. re-
gional oratorical contest in Chi-
cago. He also won the city sermon
contest of A.Z.A. He is a member
of Philornathic and Condor A. C.
During the summer, he'll still
be at his seasonal shoe-selling
post, but when fall rolls around,
the Univesity of Michigan will
get Centrars outstanding. student.
It'll be the beginning of his pre-
medical studies and the start of
another long list of honOrs for
Sheldon.

Death Cuts Short His Career
At '67 in Toronto: Held
Pulpits in U. S.

TORONTO (JP5)—Rabbi. JO.j.
seph S. Kornfeld, once • one of
the few Jewish ambassadors
whom the • United States 'sent
abroad, whose declining days
were spent in a tiny pulpit in
Virginia, died here at the age of
67 at the Holy Blossom Temple,
where he was serving as a sub-
stitute for Rabbi Maurice Eisen-
drath during the latte•'s service
as director of
• the Union, . of
American .Hebrew Congregations.
Born in. Austria-Hungary • in
1876, Rabbi Kornfeld received his
education at the . University of
Cincinnati and his rabbinical de-
gree at the Hebrew Union Col-
lege. Subsequently he occupied a
pulpit in Columbus, 0., where .he
acquired the close friendship of
Warren G. Harding. When Mr.
Harding became President, he
showed his affection for Rabbi
Kornfeld by appointing him Min-
ister to Persia, in which capacity
Rabbi Kornfeld served from 1921
to 1924.
Upon his return from his am-
bassadorial post, he re-entered
the ministry, serving in Toledo.
He left that pulpit in '1934 to en-
gage in lecture activities.
Two years ago he accepted a
pulpit at the Hebrew. Friendship
Congregation in Harrisonburg,
Va. He was called from this ob-
scurity to serve once again in a
leading congregation, but an .un-
happy fate which had dogged
him in recent years cut short his
life only a few weeks after he
had begun his new and happier
Career at the - Holy Blossom
Temple.
