The rate of volunteering for the British
Army among the Jews of Palestine is so
high proportionately that it would involve
an army of 8,000,000 volunteers in the
United States and 2,500,000 in Great Brit-
ain, Moshe Shertok, political chief of the
Jewish Agency, declared in Jerusalem at
the opening of a meeting of the Inner
Zionist Actions Committee, whose princi-
pal theme was the recruiting campaign.
The Jewish Agency, in co-operation with
the American Jewish • Joint Distribution
Committee, is now carrying out a plan to
send 8,000 parcels from Palestine, Teheran
and India to refugees in Russia. The req-
uisite funds, amounting to 60,000 pounds,
have been provided by* the Jewish Agency,
the J. D. C. and private persons in Pales-
tine.
Four hundreds and eighty Jews from
Yemen have arrived in Palestine in re-
cent months with Jewish Agency certifi-
cates and another 500 shortly will leave
Aden for this country.
A description of the school started by
Palestinian Jetvish soldiers for the chil-
dren of the Bengazi Jewish community in
Cyrenaica was given in a recent issue of
Haaretz, Tel Aviv Hebrew daily, by a sol-
dier back home on leave. Four classes
were opened in the building where the
former Talmud Torah was housed, and
instruction begun in Hebrew, arithmetic,
English, Palestine and general history,
and geography.
AMERICA
The Office of Foreign Relief and Re-
habilitation Operations is working out a
plan to provide food relief to Greece
through the intervention of Sweden and
Switzerland, Herbert H. Lehman, director,
disclosed in an article by him in Pour la
Victoire, a French language weekly in
New York. No details of the scheme were
given.
A large number of Jewish refugees ar-
riving in London from North Africa are
enlisting in the British and Allied armed
forces, it is reported in New York by Bri-
tish Information Service, an arm of the
British Government.
"At a time when we freeze men in jobs,
put ceilings on prices in order to win the
war, America must freeze intolerance and
put a ceiling on bigotry by legislation
which would make it a criminal offense to
incite racial and religious hatred," it was
declared in New York by James Waterman
Wise, addressing 500 women assembled at
a reception to honor volunteer workers of
the Women's Division of the American
Jewish Congress for their fund-raising
services in behalf of the United Jewish
War Effort for war relief in Britain, Rus-
sia and China.
The release of every one of the 4,000 to
6,000 persons, among them many Jews,
who were interned in French North Africa
concentration camps and forced labor
companies or restricted to reside in cer-
tain areas where they had to accept gov-
ernment work, was announced in Algiers
by the Joint Commission for Political
Prisoners and Refugees.

WASHINGTON, (JTA)—In an attempt to relieve the
serious shortage of manpower, the Italian government this
week announced a drastic labor *conscription under which
all Jewish men and women between 18 and 35 will be placed
at forced labor.
The Rome Radio, as reported by the Federal Communica-
tions Commission, stated that "non-Aryans" who, "among
other things, are not liable for military service," will be
drafted "to prevent anybody from evading labor service."
The broadcast added that the Jewish labor conscripts
"will be rigorously organized and directed to take up work
in areas that will be established by the Ministry of Corpora-
tions." It disclosed that the "total mobilization" will take
place on July 1.
