Friday, June 25, 1943 THE JEWISH NEWS 153 Rabbis Now Serving As Army, Navy Chaplains War Hero to Speak At Pisgah Lodge's Bond Rally Tuesday Rabbi Stone Tells of Administering fo Christians and S/Sgf. Kaminsky, Home on Jewish Boys at Services, of Burying German Convalescent Furlough, Soldiers in Tunisia Tells of Experiences (News from Jewish Chaplains on active duty as gathered by the Committee on Army and Navy Re- ligious Activities of the Jewish Welfare Board.) One hundred and fifty three rabbis — Orthodox, Reform and Conservative — have thus far donned military uniforms to serve men and women in the Army and Navy. Twenty-one more rabbis have been endorsed for service by the Committee on Army and Navy Religious Activi- ties of the Jewish Welfare Board. It is probable that before the year ends there will be a Jewish chaplains' group of 200—eight times as many as in World War I. Twenty-one of the Jewish chaplains are serving overseas and eleven others are enroute or will leave shortly. Others will follow. Commonplace Phrase It has become commonplace to say, "There are no atheists in fox-holes." But the phrase takes on all the hardships, danger and spiritual revival in this war for freedom, when one reads the de- scription by Chaplain Earl S. Stone of the advance of his unit (the 18th infantry) through Tunisia. The men were in action contin- uously and it therefore was im- possible to gather for formal re- ligious services. But the chaplain was with them at their side, ad- vancing under fire and sleeping in a self-dug fox hole. Chaplain Stone ministered to both the Christians and Jews in his unit, just as Christian chap- lains all over the world are serv- ing their Jewish men. He acted as stretcher - bearer to evacuate the wounded and buried their dead. Gather to Pray Finally, Tunis was captured and the Jewish men were able to gather together to give thanks tc the Lord. Chaplain Stone re- ported: "I held services in two battal- ions, the first in two months. But the men all assured me that they have been on very good terms with the Lord, as they have been in close contact with him in their J. STONE fox-holes and I can say the same for myself." Chaplain Stone adds a P. S. "Perhaps I should include in my report that I buried a lot of Germans. Hitler wouldn't like to know that a Jewish chaplain took care of his good Aryan soldiers, would he?" There are four other Jewish chaplains now in North Africa, Samuel M. Kaufman, Irving Tep- per and two brothers, Emanuel M. Honig and Jacob J. Honig. Chaplain Tepper had the unusual experience of conducting a Pass- over service for North African Jews in the Corps Franc d'Afri- que. Other Satisfactions Besides history-making Jewish services with liberated French soldiers, there are many other personal satisfactions in the work of the Jewish chaplains, both here and abroad. Not the least of these stems from the moving let- ters received from hte parents and the wives of the men in serv- ice. Chaplain Edward Ellenbogen at Chanute Field, Illinois, finds several dozen replies in his mail- box every week. Many come from parents, who are thankful that their sons are continuing their religious training under the Chaplain's guidance. Others are gratified that their sons are gain- ing a spiritual faith, which was absent in civilian life. TALMUDIC WISDOM Do not split yourself into many groups but be united. Credited officially with down- ing four Zeros and two probables, S/Sgt. Louis Kaminsky, son of Mr. and Mrs. Isadore Kaminsky of 1676 Gladstone Ave., is home on a convales- cent fit rl ough after being hit; in the leg and thigh by flak while on a bomb ing mis sion over Japan- ese territory. S/Sgt. Kam- insky, gunner on a bomber has received the Distingu i s h e d Sgt. Kaminsky Flying Cross, Air Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart for his outstanding work while on 64 bombing missions. He will speak at the War Bond Rally of Pisgah Lodge of Bnai Brith at Temple Beth El, June 29. S/Sgt. Kaminsky is 25 years old. Among his experiences, the most uncomfortable one, he says, was spending 20 hours in a fox- hole when the Japs bombed Hen- derson Field, where he was 'sta- tioned. While on reconnaissance duty over the Pacific, his plane ran into a major sea battle and was attacked by 11 Zeros. They managed to escape, however, but not until they had knocked down two.
