ENGGASS For a hundred and fifty years bur Constitution has been the safeguard of the American people, guaranteeing life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The time is here when we Americans must pay to keep those sacred rights. One of the means by which we have contributed to the forces which are fighting to maintain those rights is by the purchase of War Bonds. • The shells for our artillery, the bombs for our planes, the torpedos for our P. T. boats must be paid for either through taxes or through voluntary investment in 'Govern- ment securities. The more we invest, the less will have to be raised through taxes. There are other good reasons why one should continue to buy War Bonds. Income invested in War Bonds, instead of being used for the comparatively few civilian goods and C. IL ENGGASS services that will still be available to us, will do much to combat the trend toward higher prices. We must all do our part to help keep the cost of living within bounds. Then, too, the more we save now, the more we'll have after the war. Up to now we can all take pride in our country's record for war savings. But we have oily just begun to fight. The months ahead will be critical ones, and we must continue to save for our country in ever increasing amounts. This is one way we can show our gratitude to the men now fighting for the free- doms that will mean so much to all. The price we are willing to pay to defeat a power hostile to all sacred rights of civilization cannot be too great. Much misunderstanding exists concerning the 20% withholding tax, which becomes effective on July 1st. In the first place, the amount deducted is not 20% of your salary or wages, but a deduction on the amount that you receive after the specified exemptions have been credited to you. In the second place, it is not an additional tax, but is simply a means provided by your government as an easy way to save for the amount of taxes that you will owe for this year. So please understand this, and do not in any way reduct the amounts which you have been saving regularly for the purchase of War Bonds. * Other News in This Issue * Between You and Me.. 2 Center Notes 14 Children's Corner 4 Deutsch's Column 2 Editorials 4 Film Folk 14 Guest Editorial 4 Jews in Uniform 11 Letter Box 15 Local Brevities S Music 12 News Review 3 Obituaries 15 Pictorial Page 16 Purely Commentary.... 2 Quotation of the Week 2 Society News 8, 9 Strictly Confidential 2 Synagogue News 13 Talmudic Tales 4 Vocational News 12 Women's Clubs 8 Youth Listening Post 15 Zionist Appeal 6 Declaration of a state of emergency in Wayne, Macomb and Oakland Counties by Gov. Harry F. Kelly has compelled cancellation of all assemblies, including the annual election meetings of the Jewish Community Council and the United Hebrew Schools of Detroit. The election meeting of the Jewish Community Council which was to have taken place Tuesday evening, was post- poned to Tuesday evening, July 6, at the Jewish Community Council. Election of officers of the United Hebrew Schools, which was to have taken place on Thursday evening, has been post- poned to Tuesday, June 29. Installation of officers of Pisgah Lodge of Bnai Brith, which was scheduled for last Monday evening, at Temple Beth El, was postponed to the coming Monday evening, pro- vided the curfew is lifted. Numerous other meetings were cancelled, and many or- ganizational and private celebrations were called off. While the state of emergency, which is tantamount -to martial law, is believed to have ended the race riots, the cancellation of all public meetings and' assemblies and the establishment of curfews is expected to last for a week. The outrageous riots have caused havoc in many quart- ers, and the destruction of property may run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Hundreds of Jewish merchants literally were ruined as a result of the riots. Stores in the entire Hastings St., Oak- land and Westminster Ayes. and adjacent streets were de- stroyed, their windows smashed, goods looted. A meeting of Jewish merchants who suffered from the rioting and looting will be held at the Beth Yehudah Syna- gogue, Pingree and Woodrow Wilson, at 10 a. m. Sunday: An inter-racial commission formed for the purpose of coping with the problems of racial understanding in Detroit, has been called together by the Detroit Council of Churches of which the Rev. Benjamin Jay Bush is president and Thoburn T. Brumbaugh, executive secretary. Among those who have agreed to serve on this com- mission are Rabbi Morris Adler, Fred M. Butzel, Dr. Leo M. Franklin and Dr. B. Benedict Glazer. Demands are coming from all quarter that a Federal investigation be ordered and that those who were responsible for the bloodshed, rioting, murders and lootings should be held to full accountability.
