A Lesson in Politics

A King and His Taxes
Rabbi Simon tells the story of
the King, who, on returning from
a journey to a nearby country,
brought with him certain goods
on which his own country laid a
duty.
On arriving at the custom
house on the border of his coun-
try, he ordered his attendants to
pay the 'regular duty as pre-
scribed by the laws of his coun-
try.
"But your majesty," remon-
strated his attendants, "thou art
our king and art exempt from
payment of such taxes." "I in-
sist upon paying them," returned
the king firmly. "If I do not
practice honesty in paying the
taxes of my own country and
obeying its laws, how can I, in
honesty, expect my subjects to do
so."
Says the Talmud further on
the subject:
"It is sinful to deceive the gov-
ernment in taxes and duties."
"Promote the welfare of the
government because if it were
not for the respect which it in-
spires, men would swallow each
other alive."
"Those who work for the com-
munity should work without self-
ishness and with the sincere in-
tention to promote its welfare."

The American Jewish Conference Elections are teaching ,
Jews a fes.son in politics. Some will come out the wiser;
some the angrier; some should know by this time that the
mere desire on the part of some people to win election plays
an important part in human reactions.
An important question will be asked of the national .
executive committee: were the original rules and regulations
wise in themselves?
Apparently, these rules were faulty. It is impossible to
expect a complete democratic set-up unless there are popular
elections.
