WASHINGTON NOTES
Three plans, involving mass-settlement
of Jews in Arab countries as well as in
Palestine after the war, are now being
studied by American Government ex-
perts . . . One of these plans foresees the
entry. of 500,000 Jews into Palestine in
spite of the British White Paper which
provides for complete stoppage of Jewish
immigration early next year . . . It is
believed that the, State Department does
not look approvingly on the White Paper
and has so indicated . . . Some face-
saving scheme is expected which may
allow the British to keep the White
Paper, while at the same time facilitating
continued immigration Jo, Palestine . . .
Another of the three plans provides for
large scale immigration of Jews from
•Europe to Cyrenaica, with transportation
arranged with funds assigned for post-
war rehabilitation work.
PROVES THEY'RE RIGHT
It can now be told . that some time ago.
American. officials advised Zionist leaders
to approach King Ibn Saud of Saudi-
Arabia with a suggestion that he act as
mediator between the Jews and the
Arabs on the Palestine problem . . . The
Zionist leaders rejected this advice, and
the statement just published by the ruler
of Saudi-Arabia in which he- expressed
himself in oppoSitiOn to the Jews, proves
that they were right . . . What the State
Department apparently did not know
then, the Zionist leaders have known for
a long time, though King Ibn Saud pre-
ferred to keep a diplomatic silence on the•
Palestine question . . . Many persons in
America know of Ibn Saud's views on
the Arab-Jewish question through the
late Dr. Fuad . Sh.atara, president of the
Arab Union in America, who committed
suicide last year . . . Shatara, an Arab
physician, was the "private representa-
tive" of Ibn Saud in this country, but
did not make this fact known to mem-
bers of the Jewish Agency, whom he
tried to approach in NeW York.

THE JEWISH NEWS

Quotation of the Week

If I were asked to name the noblest example of faith of which I
know—the truest exemplification of this great virtue—I should speci-
fy the Jews. Through thousands of years, the Jews have suffered every
loss, humiliation and agony which the wickedness of men could devise
upon them. Twice they have seen their country completely destroyed,
and their people carried away Into exile. The second exile was perma-
nent, and for nearly two thousand years the Jews have wandered,
homeless and forsaken, upon the earth. Now, in our time, has a
greater misery descended upon them than ever before. But never
have they lost faith in the God of Israel. Still have they trusted in
the sanctity and power of His holy Law. Always, even in the dark-
est hours, have they clung tenaciously to the, hope of their restoration.
Not in all of human history do I know of any spiritual triumph to
compare with this. The faith of the Christian seems to me a feeble
thing as compared to the faith of the Jew in Zion! "Though he slay
me, yet will I trust in him"—this is the test of faith! And the Jew
has met it.

"JOKE" OF THE WEEK
- Somebody ought to do something about
Harry Hershfield, who has a perverse
sense of humor about Jews. The follow-
ing is a sample of one of his jokes on
NBC's "Can You Top This?"
An East Side pushcart peddler was
out in a terrible blizzard shouting
"Hitler! Hitler! Hitler!" The residents
of the neighborhood rushed out, only to
discover that he had bananas on his
pushcart.
"What's with this Hitler?" they de-
manded. • •
"If I hollered bananas who would come
out on a day like this?" the peddler

shrugged.

• That "joke of the week" _is supposed
to haVe hit 1,000 on the•prograrn's laugh-
meter. But if that joke were published
in a scurrilous anti-Semitic sheet secret-
ly circulated it would be condemned for
what is is: a cheap, nasty transformation
of- a Jewish sorrow into a commercial
enterprise.
