All predictions were shattered when it
was revealed, upon announcement of the
final vote, that several prominent commun-
ity leaders failed to secure election.
The policy of cumulative voting, estab-
lished by the national executive coimnittee,
permitting Electors to cast all of their nine
ballots for one candidate, • was responsible
for the election "upsets." Cumulative
"plunking" was strongly in evidence on a
majority of the ballots.
Mr. Srere opened the Electoral Conference
by thanking the Detroit Election Committee
for its services and Temple Beth El for grant-
ing the use of the building for the election.

Calling the election a "momentous occasion
of a serious nature for the Jewish people," Mr.
Srere expressed the need for unity in Jewish
life, and protested against the electioneering
methods of some groups. He read to the Elec-
tors the statement that was published in The
Jewish News two weeks ago over the signa-
tures of Detroit rabbis, who urged the . selec-
tion of a representative slate. He attacked the
system ,of cumulative voting and urged against
making use of it.
"The need for unity and for selecting
the best men was never so desperate and
so urgent," Mr. Srere declared. "We all
share.common destiny and should take
this election seriously so that all elements
should have representation."
Benjamin M. Laikin gave the instructions to
the delegates in Yiddish.
Commencing with registration of 564 Elec-
tors who were chosen from 147 organizations
and congregation's in the city; the local Elec-
toral Conference, held in the Brown Memorial
Chapel of Temple Beth El, met under the chair-
manship of Abraham Srere, chairman of the
Detroit Election Committee, who was also
named Convenor for the American Jewish Con-
ference in Detroit.
Mr. Srere addressed the Electors and gave
them instructions on balloting. He then selected
a Central Tellers' Committee, a Committee on
Voided Ballots and eight tellers' committees.
