Rep. Sadowski Makes Plea
For Palestine in Congress
Michigan Congressman Urges Roosevelt and Churchill to
Do Something at Once to Save Remaining
Jews in Europe
WASHINGTON (JPS) — "Palestine offers the most
practical haven of refuge" for the "terror-stricken victims"
of Nazi brutality, it was declared on the floor of House of
Representatives by Congressman George G. Sadowski of
Michigan. Calling upon President Roosevelt and Prime
Minister Churchill to "Do something—and please hurry!"
Mr. Sadowski observed that the new outburst of Nazi rage
against the Jews which followed the Allied victories in North
Africa calls for immediate action "to save the remaining
Jewish people in Europe," he said.
"Whatever agreement England may have with the Arabs,
limiting the number of Jews in Palestine, must be lifted in
this crisis. Time is of the essence . . . The gates of Palestine
can be opened and must be opened! The public opinion—the
opinion of the members of this Congress—the opinion of
every human being regardless of race, creed, or color—cries
out for mercy. No human being can complacently watch this
mass slaughter and do nothing about it .. . The voice and
conscience of the great mass of American and British liberty-
loving people is crying out today to Mr. Churchill and Presi-
dent Roosevelt: 'Do something—and please hurry!' " the
Michigan Congressman concluded.

Aged Jew Nabs Spy, Saved Red Soldiers
KUIBYSHEV (JTA)—An aged Jewish water carrier, whose
quick thinking saved the lives of hundreds of wounded Red Army-
men, is wearing the Medal for Military Distinction today, according
to a story in a local newspaper.. He is Alter Seigal, of Dubno, now
attached to a military field hospital on the Kuban front.
One day, several weeks ago, when Seigal went to fetch some
water. he noticed a stranger wandering around near the well in an
aimless manner, which aroused his suspicion. When he had drawn
a bucket of water from the well, he offered a drink to the man,
but the latter refused.
"Drink, or I sound the alarm," Seigal threatened. Whereupon
the stranger's hand moved to his right hip pocket. But before he
could draw his revolver, Seigal doused him with the bucket of
water, temporarily blinding him, and shouted for help. When the
well water was tested, it was found to be poisoned.
