The Feast of Weeks

Shovuoth, the Feast of Weeks, commemorating the giving
of the Law on Sinai to the Jewish people, is one of the im-
portant occasions on our calendar when we rededicate our-
selves to the service of mankind.
On Shovuoth, when so many of our boys and girls are
being consecrated to the service of their people at Confirma-
tion and Consecration Services in our Synagogues; when
groups of young people receive their diplomas from religious
and Hebrew schools, it is well that we should take stock of
our increased responsibilities.
We owe it to the next generation of Jews to give them
the best Jewish training so that they may be prepared for
leadership among their kinsmen and neighbors.
We are obligated to pledge all our energies to the service
of our community, to the end that all men and women may
aspirq to a better future.
S'novuoth, observed in time of war, challenges us to in-
crease our devotion to our faith, and to help apply the great
Jewish ethical codes to the daily responsibilities facing us
at all times.
The Festival of the Law is an occasion to remind all who
have drawn upon the teachings of our Prophets to strive to
make this a world free for all and devoid of wars. May this
Shovuoth bring us nearer to the day when all mankind will
abandon lip service in religious practices and will learn the
true meaning of the Brotherhood of Man and the Fatherhood
of God.

Flag Day, June 14

While engaged in a spirited
discussion with Rabbi Gamaliel,
Emperor Hadrian, intending to
cast ridicule upon the Bible, de-
clared:
"Why, your God is represented
in your Bible as a thief, who
stealthily came to Adam in his
sleep and robbed him of one of
his ribs."
Gamaliel's daughter, who was
present, quick witted damsel that
she was, having heard the Em-
peror's statement, exclaimed:
"Your majesty, A grave out-
rage has been perpetrated upon
our house! A prowling thief
broke into our home and carried
away a silver flagon from our
chest of plate and left a golden
one in its place."
"Well," cried Emperor Had-
rian, "what a welcome thief, in-
deed! Would that such a robber
might break into my palace."
"Indeed," replied the blushing
maiden, "was not our Creator,
whom you have just reproached,
just such a thief?"
"How so?" asked the Emperor.
"Even though he deprived
Adam of a rib," said she, "did he
not in its place give him a lovely,
loving bride?"
Says the Talmud further on
the subject of woman:
"A woman prefers poverty
with the affection of her husband
to riches without it."
"Woman has better instinct in
gauging the character of a
stranger than a man."
"Who is rich? He who has a
good wife."

June 14 will be observed as Flag Day, and it is important
that the call of the Jewish War Veterans that every home
display the Flag should be honored.
Congress officially adopted the starred and striped em-
blem as the Flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. It was
the first emblem to be designed, and its maker was Betsy
Ross.

The Pay-Off for the Mufti

A London report states that the ex-Mufti of Jerusalem
has been ousted from the Arab propaganda office which was
set up jointly by Germany and Italy. This action resulted
from the Axis defeat in North Africa.
Thus, the pay-off is that .the Mufti has lost favor because
he has failed to deliver the goods. His influence among Arabs
has proved insignificant.
Will other Arabs recognize the futility of dealing with
destroyers of democracy?
Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia, please take note of the fate
of the ex-Mufti.

This Week's Scriptural Portions:

On every festival these words

descendants of Aaron. But on
Shovuoth they take on additional
significance. For they are the

God hoped the acceptance of the
Torah would bring to Israel.
When the benedictions of the
kohanim are fulfilled, not alone
will Israel dwell securely, but all
mankind will again turn to the
divine ideals that were trans-
mitted to Israel and humanity
from Mount Sinai.
