WASHINGTON ECHOES:
The. State Department may quietly
tercede with Gen. Giraud on the question
of restoring the Cremieux Degree which
he abolished . . . This may be done within
the next fortnight, as a result of material
which has reached the State Department
proving that the abrogation of the Cre-
rnieux Decree not only affects the native
Jews of Algeria, but can also serve as a
harmful precedent for the treatment of
Jews in other countries liberated from
the Axis.
Various government agencies are now
interested in compiling lists of names of
leading anti-Semites in Nazi-occupied
countries for the benefit of Allied admin-
istrators in liberated territories.
At the same time the question of com-
pensation • for Jews whose property has
either been confiscated or "Aryanized" in
Axis countries is also being carefully
studied by interested organizations . . .
All this indicates that the day of reckon-
ing for the Nazis and their satellites is
far less distant than many may think and
that preparations for that day are being
made without losing sight of the Jewish
angle . . . It seems that in Rumania, Hun-
gary and Slovakia local officials are al-
ready preparing themselves for this day.
. . From all indications those officials
are trying to . "insure" their futures by
being tolerant to a few individual Jews
in order to be able to "prove" later that
they were not voluntarily persecuting the
Jews.

THE ZIONIST SCENE:
Though the annual convention of the
Zionist Organization of America appar-
ently will not take place before Septem-
ber, the name of Dr. Israel Goldstein is
already being mentioned as the coming
ZOA president .. . And Judge Morris
Rothenberg's name is mentioned as the
coming president of the Jewish National
Fund of America.
Leading Zionist officials are interested
in securing priorities on American planes
for the delegation which the Jewish Anti-
Fascist Committee in Russia is sending to
the United States .. . As these lines are
written, the delegation composed of the
famous actor 8; Mikhoels, and the poet
Isaac Feffer are still in Teheran waiting
for transportation . . . By the time this is
published, however, they may be in The
United States,on priority accommodations
secured for them, . not by the Russian
Embassy, but by important Zionists in
this country . . . Russian War Relief
originally objected to just a Jewish dele-
gation coming from Russia.

"The closer the United Nations come to a military victory
over the Axis, the more self-searching they must be with regard
to their moral and spiritual credentials. To withhold possible rescue
and salvation from innocent human beings marked for extermina-
tion, is a sin against both Religion and humanitarianism. In the name
of both Religion and hurhanity, we appeal to the religious conscience
of our American government to deliver from the pit of death, men,
women and children, who are fervent allies in spirit."

—Dr. Israel Goldstein, President, Synagogue Council of America.

THE "BLACK MARKET" SCARE
Jews should learn not to become. pani-
cky every time they read a Jewish name
among those charged with "Black Mar-
ket" violations. Our people must begin to
understand that we are not all angels and
that a normal people will have not only
heroes and geniuses but also a few mo-
rons and law-breakers.
Nevertheless, when a situation arises
demanding action, we must be prepared
to face the issues.
After all, not only anti-Semites but
some of our over-zealous.Jews are always
ready to berate and bemoan and criticize.
Therefore, responsible Jews must begin
to learn from the experience of other
communities.
The British Jewish communities know
the situation. They experienced the trials
and tribulations of rationing .before we
did, and at them was leveled the first
charge of Black Marketeering.

STRANGER THAN FICTION

The Jews - who had the jitters when
John P. Monroe, nee Kaplan, was on the
front pages of the newspapers because of
the revelations about his "houSe on R
Street," needn't have been so panicky. -
For , John Monroe is not a Jew even
though his name is Kaplan. John was
adopted by the Kaplan family when he
was a youngster and he never abandoned
his own Christian faith. That should teach
Jews a lesson about making it their own
personal responsibility when some person
with a Jewish-sounding name isn't as up-
right an American as he ought to be!

Our "friends" in Washington who "ac-
cidentally" mention a Jewish name when
they want to get across an anti-Semitic
idea without taking the consequences of
intolerance, have been banging away at
Dr. Julius Hirsch, former German minis-
ter of finance in the days of inflation.
Hirsch is being linked with the allega-
tions of "inflation" directed at the New
Deal; and his detractors "accidentally"
mention that when he was a financial
administrator in Berlin, people used
wheelbarrows of money to buy a potato.
Chief target is Hirsch's book,' "Price Con-
trol in the War Economy." Fact is few
people. are as familiar with the real rea-
sons for inflation as Hirsch.

SPURLAS VERSENKT

Now - that Leon Blum ' is spurlos ver-
senkt in some Nazi prison, Louis Brown,
ing, who worked out the administrative
reorganization scheme for the President,
reveals who is responsible for the phrase
"with a passion for anonymity" applied
to the President's six assistants. It seems
that many years ago a Frenchman wrote
a book on administration in government
and it spoke of the need of "administra-
tors possessed of great physical strength,
high competency and a passion for
anonymity." The book was published un-
der a pseudonym. Years afterward when
its author became president of the
French Council of Ministers, he gave the.
book the name of its true author when a
new edition was issued.. The author -was
Leon Blum, . favorite target for the edi-
torials of William Randolph Hearst, the
same Leon Blum whose "passion for
anonymity" went so far that when 'he
was Premier of France he felt it espe-
cially necessary . to deal with the Nazis
because to have done otherwise might ,
have led to charges he was exhibiting his
Jewishness! .

Though this was rather. belated,
The Jews felt highly elated;
For they thought that some deed
Would . follow with speed
And- hundreds of thousands would shortly
be freed.

And the civilized states
Would open their gates
And help in large scale and grand

In trying to save
From torture and grave
The victims of Nazi oppression.
A beautiful dream, but many weeks
passed
When little was done, until at long last
A meeting was called—to explore
The whole situation once more.

It was held in Bermuda-on-the-sea,
Ivory tower where no naked refugee
Could emerge from the waves of the
ocean
In order to stir up emotion.

The results are not knoWn yet, I hear
They won't be too helpful; I fear,
Because were they anything to brag

They'd have . been announced, 'e --
