Witness Tells of Uprising
Against Nazis in Warsaw

Secret Polish Radio Confirms Reports of Liquidation o
Ghetto; Says Leon Blum Confined in New Con-
centration Camp in Poland

LONDON, (JTA)—Despite the almost super-human re-
sistance put up by the Jews of Warsaw—aided and armed by
the Polish underground—the ghetto there has been complete-
ly liquidated by Nazi troops, according to a broadcast by the
secret Polish radio SWIT, heard here this week.
SWIT also announced that Leon Blum, former premier
of France, is confined in the newly established concentration
camp at Majdanek in central Poland. Many fled the Warsaw
ghetto, were subsequently apprehended and are also confined
there as are leading Jewish political figures from various oc-
cupied European countries.
The new camp holds about 15,000 prisoners, divided into
five sections, the broadcast said. The first is for Jews; the
second for Jews and Poles who have been sentenced to
death; the third for prisoners transferred from Pawiak prison
in Warsaw; the fourth for victims of street roundups; the
fifth being reserved for women.

Embattled Jews Fly Flags of Allies from Ghetto

KUIBYSHEV, (JTA)—The first detailed, eye-witness account
of the uprising by the remnants of the Warsaw ghetto against the
German extermination squads was received here this week by the
Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee from underground groups in Poland.
• From the highest buildings in the ghetto, the embattled Jews
flew flags of Poland, Great Britain and the Soviet Union, the report
reveals. Bands of Jewish insurgent stormed the infamous Paviak
prison and released scores of political prisoners. Fierce battles broke
out in the ruined Nalevki district and on Muranov Square when the
Germans threw artillery, tanks and bombers against the Jews.

Polish Guerrillas Battle Nazi Troops

Polish guerillas struck the German troops and fighting raged on
Lange Street adjoining the ghetto gates. These groups had previously
engineered an attempt to assassinate Gov. Fisher several days after
he had issued an order for the liquidation of the ghetto and suc-
ceeded in killing police chiefs Kersky and Reszhinsky.
The reports state that the revolt which broke out in the ghetto
on April 18 was the culmination of similar uprisings which • have
raged in Warsaw • since last December, when Jews who were being
rounded up for deportation attacked the Nazi guards with axes and
spades.

Nazis Greeted by Volleys from Rifles
On March 17, for the first time since the establishment of the

ghetto, German troops sent into the Jewish quarter by Warsaw Gov.
Fisher were greeted with volleys from rifles. Jewish firing from
behind hastily erected street barricades, killed 50 Germans before
they were crushed.
It was following this revolt that Gov. Fisher ordered that "the
ghetto be completely destroyed." On April 18, picked S. S. detach-
ments broke into the ghetto and were met by machine gun fire
and hand grenades, supplied to the Jews by members of the "Na-
tional Guards," the Polish underground army. (It is not known
whether the battle in the ghetto still continues.)

proval. All but 29,000 of this quota already have entered
