Of Yugoslavia, Talks Here

Detroit Chapter of American Jewish Congress Sponsors
Address of Rabbi Who Fled Nazis, at
Center Tuesday

Dr. Isaac Alcalay, Chief Rabbi of Yugoslavia who es-
caped when it was invaded by the Nazis, coming to the
United States after visiting Turkey, Palestine and Brazil,
will address a public meeting at the Jewish Community
Center next Tuesday evening.
The meeting was arranged by the Detroit chapter of

the American Jewish CongresS,
Whose president, 'Leon Kay, will
preside.
Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, in
188.1, 'Dr. Alcalay comes from a
Sephardic family. His ancestors
left Spain in 1492. The family
name is an adaption of the name
Alkala, the Spanish town from
which they originally came.

Well Educated

Educated in the primary schools
of Belgrade, Serbia, Dr. Alcalay
received his higher education in
Vienna where he was graduated
.from the Rabbinical College. Bel-
grade, in need of a rabbi, waited
until his graduation and sum-
. moiled him in 1898 to head the
Sephardic Congregation.
In 1910, Dr. Alcalay became
Chief Rabbi of Little Serbia. He
guided his community -through
the turbulent years of the Balkan
War. of 1912 and the four years
of the first World. War, assuming
many duties which he carried
out efficiently, endearing himself
to his followers.

Increased Budgets.

At the end of the last war, when
the Serbian, Croatian and Slo-
venian elements were combined
under the new name of the gov-
ernment of Yugoslavia, the Jew-
ish community was granted in-
creased. budgets for the mainten-
ance of its schools and the Chief
'Rabbinate became a state-main-
-tainecl office.
Rabbi Alcalay received num-
erous invitations from. the United
States and Great Britain to visit
in these countries, but he chose
to remain at home in view of the
many duties he had to perform.
In 1923, when all the Jewish
communities of Yugoslavia—Se-
phardic, Ashkenazic and Liberal
—united, Dr. Alcalay was named
Chief Rabbi of the Jewish Com-
munity of Yugoslavia. He found
a number of seminaries which
were conducted both in Hebrew
and the official language of the
country,---Serbian—and establish-
ed publishing houses which issued
Hebrew textbooks on religious
subjects and on Jewish history.
