Barney Ross, Guadalcanal hero and former world's champion boxer, would like to -spend his entire furlough with former buddies, but there is another job to be done —boosting morale on the home front—he stated on a visit to Downtown USO Club last weekend. Ross is a Sergeant in the Marines. In the above picture he is shOwn with. men from the various American services and a Canadian airman. In civilian clothes—left to right—are Jack Spencer, field di- rector of the Army and Navy Committee of the Jewish Welfare Board, a USO divi- sion; George F. Pierrot, Metropolitan Detroit USO Managing Director, and on the extreme right, Saniuel Rubiner, chairman of the loc -al Army and Navy Committee of the Jewish Welfare Board, who was host to Ross. Barney Ross and Spencer grew up in the same neighborhood and went to school together in Chicago, and it was a real reunion for both of them. The JWB man claims that Ross was as great a guy to the kids in his own neighborhood as he was in the ring or the Army; that through the years he has consistently exerted, himself to find jobs or do some favor for the lads of his boyhood. —Page 7 Other News In This Issue Between You and Me 2 Center Notes 14 Coining Events 16 Congregational News 12 Detroit Happenings 16 Deutsch's Column 2 Editorials 4 Feature of the Week 6 Jews in Uniform 14 Local Brevities 15 News Review 3 Obituaries 15 Personality Sketch 11 Purely Commentary 2 Quotation of the Week 2 Sermonette 4 Society News 8, 9 Strictly Confidential 2 Talmudic Tales 4 8 Women's Clubs Youth Listening Post 15 20 Years Ago 16
