The National Jewish Conference:
An Approach to Unity in Our Ranks

By ABRAHAM SRERE

Convenor for the American Jewish Conference in Detroit;
President, Jewish Welfare Federation

At long last it appears that American Jewry is approaching a major degree of
unity. At least, with all Of the trials and tribulations we are undergoing at the
present time; we can rejoice that some good is emerging in the formation of the
National Jewish Conference.
The movement, inaugurated at Pittsburgh and now taking shape through the
democratic organizations being set up in communities throughout the land,. is
aimed at establishing that unity, which will permit us to come before the nations
of the world and plead the cause of our suffering brethren with dignity, with
courage and with authority. Much can be accomplished by such an organization
which in a great measure will be the voice of American Jewry.

American Jewry is practically the only community of free Jews in the world
who are in position to speak with authority in denianding equality of rights for
our fellowmen wherever they may dwell. However, the weakness or strength of
our position depends upon the cooperation of our people in this country regard-
less of any philosophical or ideological differences that may exist.

Unless we present a united front we will be too weak in the presentation of
our case for human rights for our kinsmen throughout the world and for a total
adherence, by Great Britain to her proinises to facilitate the establishment of a
Jewish homeland in Palestine. Without unity it is futile to expect desirable results.
Having established unity in our Own ranks, we may well hope to secure the co-
operation of the Christian world. Should we fail in the former, it will be well nigh
impossible to attain the latter;

Therefore, we may well say that by cementing the friendship and unity we are
aiming at, better days are ahead and we will be able to mobilize the support we
need among the nations of the world in behalf of the future freedom of our people
everywhere.

I have faith that our people will respond loyally to the call for participation
in the American Jewish Conference. May this effort and the subsequent delibera-
tions bring the good we seek for our tragically afflicted people.
