What's Happening in Detroit
VICTORY GARDENS are claiming the attention of
all citizens;' now that warmer weather permits
preparation of the ground s and sowing.
In addition to private gardens, arrangements are
being made for the planting of large community
gardens.
One of the leading undertakings of this sort will be
the Victory Garden adjoining the United Hebrew
Schools' branch at the Rose Sittig Cohen Bldg. 'on
Lawton and Waverly.
Bernard Isaacs, superintendent of the United He,.
brew Schools; stated this week that the lot adjoining
this school will be used by the children to plant their
own Victory Garden. Further announcements will be
made next week.

Victory Gardens at Shaarey Zedek
The lot next to Congregation Shaarey Zedek, on
Rochester Ave.,- is being transferred into a series of
victory gardens.
The Shaarey Zedek Boy Scout and Girl Scout
Troops will work on these gardens under the super-
vision of Hyman Keidan and Mrs. Morris Adler.
Prepare for National Jewish Conference
Plans for the forthcoming National Jewish Confer-
ence are being made by a' . number of Detroit organiz-
ations.
Numerous groups - here are' discussing the confer-
ence problems and are awaiting the call for the local
gathering to plan for the Detroit elections.

ference.

Congress Conference Sunday
A conference of representatives of local organiza-
tions has been called by Leon Kay, president of the
Detroit chapter of the American Jewish Congress, for
this Sunday, at 2 P. M., at the Shaarey Zedek, to dis-
cuss the Congress program and to review the events
which have made necessary the convening of the
National Jewish Conference.
Rabbi Morris Adler will be the guest speaker at
this conference and Mr. Kay will speak briefly. There
will be general discussion by the delegates.
All local organizations are urged to send delegates
to this conference.

Compile Detroit Jewry's War Record
Detroit Jewry's war record is being compiled by the
Army and Navy Committees of the Jewish Welfare
Board.
Fred M. Butzel is chairman of the Michigan com-
mittee and Samuel Rubiner is chairman of the Detroit
committee.
Forms to be filled in for servicemen appear on this
page. Additional forms are available at the Jewish
Community Center.
If you have a brother, sister, friend, sweetheart or relative in the United
States armed forces, you have an obligation to report that fact to the War
Records Project of the Detroit Army and Navy Committee of the Jewish
Welfare Board. The only authentic record of participation of American Jews
in the war is being compiled nationally by the Jewish Welfare Board and
locally by its Army and Navy Committee. Information on enlistments,
decorations, and casualties should be forwarded to the Bureau of War
Records, Army and- Navy Committee, JWB, Jewish Community Center,
8904 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, Michigan.
Zionist Youth Conference May 22-23
The Zionist Youth Council- of Detroit wil hold its
second annual conference, May 22 and 23, at the Rose
Sittig Cohen Bldg. The theme of the conference will
be "Zionist Youth Takes Action."
Joe Epel, Daniel Ginsburg, Miriam Davis, Esther
Duchin, Lena Margolis, and. Akivah Drasnin will lead
the panels on "Zionist Peace Aims," "Post-War Plan-
ning," "Jewry in the World Scene," "Intercomrnunity
Relations," "Fund Raising,!'. and "Education Within
Zionist Ranks."
The Zionist Youth Colineil Proposes to sponsor. a
petition to Congress protesting the -inaction of the
Allied nations in giving 'Ilitler's victims a chance to
live.

to Persia, by the Persian Jewish community, which
expressed its gratitUde to Rabbi Kornfeld for his
having prevented' the massacre of hundreds of Jews
during attacks on the Jewish- qUarter of this city
. during the - early part of 1922, during which many
Jews were beaten.
GENEVA—His- activities on behalf of Jews. in
• Poland, Rtunania and elsewhere, were related by
Dr. Fridjhof Nanseri in his report to the League
of Nations Council on the activities of the Advis-
ory committee to. the High Commissariat for Refu-
gees.. He repOrted that - following his intervention,
Rumania agreed to refrain from a mass expulsion
of 10,000 - J e wish refugees • from Bessarabia
and Premier - Wladyslaw Sikorski ..of Poland .prorri-
ised he • would hold up the expulsion of - thousands
- of • Russian Jews: if measures were taken immediately
•to find asylum for them. The Soviet Government,
Dr. Nansen said, has expressed Willingness to , allow
the repatriation of Russian Jews.
JERUSALEM—Sir Gilbert Clayton, new Civil
Secretary for PaleStine, told a meeting of the Zion-
ist Executive that he would strictly adhere to the
White Paper of 1922, which outlined British policy
in Palestine. He said that he would take into ac - •
_• count the British . guarantees for .the erection of a
Jewish National Home, , on one hand, and the Arab
aspirations on the other.
BERLIN—The State Supreme Court has handed
down a decision declaring "constitutional" the law
• banning the. German Peoples Party which has close
ties' With •• the National Socialist Party of Adolf
Hitler. Both groups are reported to be under the
- command of General Ludendorf.
PRAGUE—The Czechoslovak Ministry of Educa-
tion has announced that it will find places in Czech
universities for some of the Jewish students recently
barred from Austrian universities under the num-
erus clausus.
