WASHINGTON = (Religious News Service) Chief of
Chaplains William R. Arnold has announced that arrange-
ments have been made with the Catholic Biblical AssOciation•
of America and the Confraternity of: Christian - Doctrine- to•
eliminate from copies of the Roman Catholic revised edition
of the New Testament distributed to the Catholic personnel
of the U. S. Army a footnote;
which states that "the Jews are
the synagogue "ofSatan."
It was pointed out that the foot-
note might be misinterpreted by
those not familiar with the his-
tory and background of New
Testament times.

lypse of . St. John the 'Apostle,

slandered by•thoSe who *say they
are Jews and are not, but are a
synagogue of Satan." The *foot-
note read: "The Jews are the
synagogue . of Satan. The true
synagogue is • the Christian
Church."

NEW YORK — (Religious News Service) A documented
survey of evidence on the mass murder of Jews in Nazi-
controlled Europe, was made public here by the department
of research and education of the Federal Council of Churches.
Declaring that "the suffering of the Jewish people in
Europe is beyond anything the civilized imagination can
picture" the survey points out
that "the quantity of the evidence
is so enormous, the sources are so
varied and their correspondence
in substance and import so close
even in detail as to compel
belief."
Press Campaign
A detailed exposition then fol-
lows of the various steps under-
taken by national socialist lead-
ers to press a "deliberate cam-
paign of extermination" through-
out the continent of Europe.
"The long-drawn-out, relentless
process of physical depletion
through starvation, mental wreck-
ing through torment and fear, and
spiritual degradation through in-
credible brutalization has culmin-
ated in a ferocious program of
mass slaughter," the survey states.
`Day of Compassion'
Publication of the . Federal
Council survey was : authorized in
the Council's designation of Sun-
day, May 2, as a "Day of Com-
passion" for the suffering Jews
of Europe. - - -
