restrained than ever before. Qqr Jewish people, a small minority
restrained
everywhere, with no means of defending themselves by force ; is
exposed to the cruellest suffering, even to complete annihilation, to
far greater degrees than any other people in this world. The hatred
raging against us is grounded in the fact that we have upheld the
ideal of harmonious partnership and given it expression in word and
deed among the best of our people.
"There can be today no higher goal for a Jew than to aid with all
his power all those of his fellow-Jews whom our aid can reach. To my
great satisfaction I have observed that the rescue work supported by
the United Jewish Appeal is excelleiatly organized and most highly
important for the salvation of our people.

STORRS AN!! ZIONISM
Sir Ronald Storrs, first Governor of
Jerusalein under British rule, has been
saying things that are not very helpful
to the Zionist cause. •
Nearly six years ago, Sir Ronald pub-
lished his autobiography under the title
"The Memoirs of Sir Ronald Storrs." In
that record of his dealings with the
Zionists we are given warning that he
can not-be expected to go full way with
us in claiming an autonomous Jewish
commonwealth.
The story of his experiences in Pale-
tine is worth reading. If he is • to be
conferred with in the future on the
Palestinian issues, Jewish leaders . must
familiarize themselves with his attitudes.
NOT AN ANTI-SEMITE
He is not an anti-Semite, and by his
own declaration we must believe that
he is neither pro Arab nor pro-Zionist.
But he has certainly given preference
to the point of view of those Who - would
denude Zionism of its most sacred prin-
ei pi CS.
For instance, when he spoke of the
riots o 1920 and 1921, he resented the
"tempest of vituperation in the Palestine
and World Hebrew press" and stated that,
having to endure such a tempest, "I am
still unable to understand .how I did
not emerge from it an anti Semite for
life:" • -
These are strong words.
•-
THE . gpsTfoN OF FIRMNESS
Thus, in his memoirs, Sir Ronald
Storrs says nothing about the necessity
of firm dealing with Arab gangsters, but
he did advocate a: . firm stand where the
"powerful influences of the Zionist Or-

The American and British delegations
at the Bermuda Conference on refugees
seem to have received different instruc-

CONFESSION—
Confession is good for the soul, and so
this columnist admits that in a recent re ,'
mark on the subject of war . service he
was guilty of an indiscretiOn--no, let's
hurdle the barrier of ego,*and admit it
was plain 'stupidity. .
Talking of war service, all hail to
Samuel Goldsmith of Chicago; one of the
nation's leading social workers and sta-
tisticians, who heads the Chicago Jewish
charities. It is no longer "Mr." but Major
Goldsmith, he having been eagerly wel-
corned by • the armed forces . . Another
leading social worker of the nation sched-
uled to render service overseas is Kurt
Peiser, Philadelphia - executive, who has
accepted an arclUouS assignment from the
Joint Distribution Committee. North Af-
rica is rumored to be his destination.
. . . Donald Hurwitz of New Haven is
said to be another acquisition by the
J.D.C. for its European expanded field of
activities. Hurwitz directs the welfare
fund o his city.
And while listing losses to Jewish com-

accounting shows 'that the Anti-Defama-

quarters staff to the armed forces Out of
an original staff of 20 men. Every one of
them entered the Army as a private and
seven are already commissioned officers.
In addition, 'three . girls on the ADL staff
are now the WAAC . An analysis of

NEW ENCYCLOPEDIA
There not having been enough diffi-
