Stand Up and Be Counted!
A Call to Detroit Jews to Cooperate in Assembling the
Record of Participation in the Armed Forces
I
T IS AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENT
of the American tradition to maintain and cherish
the record of our country's peace-time and war-time
heroes. Such a record, reflecting the growth of our
country from a nation of thirteen seaboard states to
its present continental dimensions, is a constant re-
minder of our traditions of democracy and of the
character of the United States of America as a land
developed by people of all faiths, races and origins.
YOU can HELP..
If you have a brother, sister, friend,
sweetheart or relative in the United States
armed forces, you have an obligation to re-
port that fact to the War Records Project

of the Jewish Welfare Board. The only au-

1776 down through the present struggle. In their
honor we have set aside national holidays. In addi-
tion, local regions and various groups in the Ameri-
can population have kept their own records of par-
ticipation in our history and have delighted to
honor their own heroic sons.

Our civic responsibility imposes upon us the ob-
ligation—borne by all groups—to continue to main-
tain the record.
For us Jews, however, such a record is particular-
ly important. A past of misunderstanding or ignor-
ance of the part played by the Jew in his country's
history makes it imperative that we keep that record
and make it known. The record is not for those who
harbor unreasoning prejudice or who fall into the
treasonable trap of our enemies who seek to divide
us. The truth will probably not affect them. But
there are many more millions of Americans who are
simply not informed. We owe those fair-minded
Americans a knowledge of the facts of Jewish par-
ticipation in all aspects of our national life.
In the first World War the record of the partici-
pation of Jews in our armed services was compiled
by the American Jewish Committee with the aid
and financial support of the Jewish Welfare Board.
That material has formed the basis for whatever
popular knowledge now exists of the participation
of American Jews in World War I.
