Campaign. Underway This Week, Stimulated• on Eve of
National Jewish Assembly; Abe Kasle, tvlorris
Schaver Chairmen of Drive
The necessity for organized Jewish effort in defense of
Jewish rights throughout the world and the need for an
understanding of the world Jewish position on the eve of the
convening of the National Jewish Assembly, is stimulating
increased efforts on the part of the Detroit chapter of the
American Jewish Congress, according to Leon Kay, president
of this chapter.
Mr. Kay announced this week
that a city-wide membership
campaign has been inaugurated
under the chairmanship of Abe
Kasle. Morris Schaver is acting
as Mr. Kasle's co-chairman.
Committee Heads
At the same time, an organiza-
tional committee is enlisting the
cooperation of local organiza-
tions in the Jewish Congress
Work here. The organizational
committee is headed by Mrs.
Esther Mendelson and Harry
Kaminer.
A cultural meeting to enlighten
the community on the Congress
ideology will be held next Wed-
nesday evening at the Rose Sit-
tig Cohen Bldg. Max Kopstein
of Chicago, president of the Mid-
west Region of the American
Jewish Congress, will be the
guest speaker. The public is in-
vited to this rally.
Meet Sunday
At 2 p. in. on Sunday, at the
Shaarey Zedek, a meeting of the
Detroit landsmansheften will be
held in the Kate Frank Memorial
Bldg., to enlist local organiza-
tions in the Congress.
Rabbi Morris Adler will be the
guest speaker and a brief address
will be delivered by Mr. Kay.
All local organizations are asked
to send delegates to this confer-
ence.
Mr. Kasle has issued an appeal
to several hundred Detroit Jews
to join the American Jewish Con-
gress and to participate in its
work of defending the Jewish
position on all fronts.
Mr. Kasle asks his friends not
to wait for the appeal being sent
through the mails for member-
ship in the Congress but to send

of $3 per year dues, at his office,

Rally Wednesday
At the rally next Wednesday,
Mrs. Samuel Katkin will be in
charge of the social hour.
Mr. Kopstein's address will be
preceded by brief remarks by
Mr. Kay and Mrs. Perry Burn-
stifle, president of the Women's
Division.
Mr. Kopstein is a graduate of
Harvard Law School. He is an
active Zionist and is a member
of the executive committee of the
World Jewish Congress and the
Inter-American Jewish Council,
The annual election meeting of
the Women's Division will be
held May 12.
The Hebrew University an-
nounced the establishment of a
Sir Moses Montefiore Chair of
English Literature. Prof. J.
Isaacs, lecturer at Kings College,
London, since 1928, has been
named professor of the new de-
partment which has been estab-
lished with funds provided by a
committee named for the late
Sir Moses in England.

Succumbs to Heart Ailment;
-Hundreds Pay Tribute
to Farband Leader
Morris Kramer, for many years
secretary of the City Committee
of all the Detroit branches of the
Jewish National Workers' Alli-
ance (Farband) died last Friday
of a heart ailment. He was 51.
His home was at 2962 Tuxedo
Ave.
Hundreds of members of the
Farband were at the funeral ser-
vices at the Chesed shel Emes on
Joy Road to pay final tribute to
his memory. Eulogies were de-
livered by Joseph Haggai, Rabbi
Leizer Levine, A. Meyerowitz
and Harry Siegel.
At Ma chpelah Cemetery,
where interment took place,
Rabbi Morris Adler delivered the
funeral sermon.
The body was taken from
Shesed shel Emes to Shaarey
Zedek, from there to the Far-
band Shule on Taylor Ave.,
then to his late residence, before
the funeral procession proceeded
to the cemetery.
Mr. Kramer was born in Vilna
and came to Detroit 33 years ago.
He was associated with a whole-
sale grocery firm here and for
the last two years was the De-
troit ,correspondent of the Jewish
Morning Journal. He was active
in the Farband, the Farband
Shule and the Gewerkshaften.
He is survived by his wife,
Mildred, to whom he was mar-
ried in Detroit in 1915; a daugh-
ter, Mrs, Gerson Berris; two
sons, Lt. Richard Kramer, sta-
tioned at Bradley Field, Conn.,
and Pvt. Albert Kramer.
