WASHINGTON (JPS) — As American and British rep-
resentatives gathered at Bermuda to "explore" the refugee
problem, criticism from editorial and political sources was
directed at the nature of the conference by friends of the
refugees and by some who feared that the way might be
paved for larger refugee immigration into the United States.
In addition to the official delegates already announced by
the State Department, it was revealed that two advisers had
been designated to accompany the delegation headed by
Princeton University President Dodds.
These are George Warren, secretary of the President's
Intergovernmental Committee for Refugees, and Georg Back-
er, former publisher of the New York Post and identified
with several national Jewish organizations, including the Ort
and the Joint Distribution Committee.

Barrage of Criticism from Press
A barrage of criticism was laid down by the press be-

cause of the original intention of the governments to permit
no newspapermen to cover the conference. This edict was
relaxed to permit a single representative of several news-
paper agencies to go to Bermuda.
John O'Donnell, Washington correspondent of the New
York Daily News, has taken the lead in inferring that the
purpose of the Bermuda conference is to open the way for a
large refugee immigration into the United States.
Alfred Landon was one of those who condemned the
Bermuda conference on the ground that there was no Con-
gressional representation. (Sol Bloom, chairman of the House
Foreign Affairs Committee, is a member of the delegation.)
House Minority Leader Martin emphasized that the Ber-
muda conference might result in certain recommendations
and that it was important for Congress to have a full knowl-
edge of the proceedings from the beginning.

`What's in Those Bags, Uncle?'

The New York Post, who publisher is Mrs. Dorothy
Schiff Backer, devoted its editorial page and a cartoon to a
discussion of the Bermuda conference. The cartoon showed
Uncle Sam rowing to Bermuda with a series of bags marked
"Ifs," "Buts," and "Vague Ideas." The caption was: "What's
in those bags, Uncle?"

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Can YOU tell if the war hero you're reading of is or isn't
a Jew? The ONLY way you can be sure—many non-Jews
have Jewish-sounding names and vice versa—is to help the
Bureau of War Records of the • Jewish Welfare Board in its
gigantic task of checking and assembling a permanent record
of Jewish participation in this war.

During this war your doctor's
time is consumed by added
work due to shortage of trained
nurses, technicians, and the loss
of many doctors to the armed
services. You can hand the ex-
tra time your doctor needs to
him by reducing the likelihood
of disease, by living sanely, by
avoiding accidents due to
carelessness.
Serve America in war as well
as victory! Live sensibly. And
when you need the services of
a doctor, follow his instructions
to the letter.
Your doctor's prescription filled
exactly by Cunningham's de-
pendable, registered pharma-
cists.

... How can YOU help?

By giving us the name of every Jewish man and woman you
know, now in the armed forces of the United States. Tell us
when they receive citations for bravery, or when they are
reported as casualties. Only through your alertness, interest
and cooperation can an official record of American Jews in -
this war be achieved.
