350,000 Jews Still Alive
In Poland, London Learns

Figure Is 10 Pct. of Total There Before Outbreak of War;
OWI in Washington Hears Only 40,000 Remain
in Warsaw Out of 500,000

- LONDON, (JTA)—The "most optimistic estimates" in-
dicate that the total number of Jews in all of Poland at
present—including those in the ghettos, in camps and living
in non-Jewish areas—does not exceed 350,000, as compared
with the 3,500,000 Jews who lived in Poland before the out-
break of the war, according to an appeal from Polish Jewish
leaders reaching here through emmissaries of the under-
ground organizations.
40,000 Jews Still In Warsaw, Report

WASHINGTON, (JTA)—Only 40,000 Jews remain in Warsaw
of the 500,000 Jews who lived in the ghetto there, the Stockholm
newspaper Svenska Morgenbladet states in a front page article
reported to the Office of War Information here. The Swedish
paper said that its facts were based on information received by
the Swedish Israel Mission "from direct sources."
Only a "miraculous rescue" could have saved those remaining
from death because "starvation is common and typhus is ram-
pant," the article states.

been deported from Salonika, and their property and homes con-

the Jews , are being sent to Poland, the report adds. This jibes
with information reaching the Polish Government last week.

Church Fights Nazi Anti Semitism in Denmark

-

STOCKHOLM, (JTA)—Nazi attempts to transplant Getman
anti-Semitism to Denmark continue to be met with resistance by
the clergy there, reports reaching here disclose. Dean Johannes
Nordentoft, writing in the organ of the Danish clergy, is quoted as
stating:
"Christians must be among the first to fight this dirty anti-
Semitism. All honest people should take part in this fight.. Those
who remain silent, or look upon anti-Semitism only with mild
distaste, are accomplices in the campaign of hate."

Roosevelt Gets
Protest on Bible

NEW YORK (JPS)—A protest
has been sent to President
Roosevelt against the distribu-
tion among the armed forces
here and overseas of a Catholic
version of the Bible that is al-
legedly anti-Semitic, according to
an announcement by Kenneth
Leslie, chairman of the Protes-
tant Textbook Commission.
Leslie charged that the foot-
notes in the Bible are "bound to
make serious trouble and cause
disunity." His direct appeal to
the President was based on the
fact that the Bible has been re-
printed by the United States
government printing office un-
der the direction of the chief of
chaplains, Brig. Gen. William A.
Arnold.
Quoting from a page in the
Apocalypse of St. John, referring
to a letter to the church at
Smyrna, he pointed to a footnote
explaining one of the sentences.
It reads:
"The Jews are the synagogue
of Satan. The true synagogue is
the Christian Church." He wrote
to the President that "the ex-
pression is a typical anti-Semitic
statement from the fascist and
anti - Semitic dictionary of
Charles E. Coughlin."
The critics of this revised ver-
sion fail to call attention to the
fact that the volume was issued
in 1941.

Anti-Zionists Seek
Brodetsky's Ouster

LONDON (JPS) — The anti-
Zionists of Britain have launched
a campaign to oust President
Selig Brodetsky and other Zion-
ist leaders from key positions in
the British Board of Deputies, it
is learned.
It is alleged that the anti-Zion-
ists are seeking to fill these posi-
tions with persons who share
their opinions in order to influ-
ence the formulation of postwar
aims along the lines they advo-
cate.
