The Record of Our Men in Service
By SAMUEL RUBJNER
Chairman, Detroit Army. and Navy Committee
of the Jewish Welfare Board
True to tradition, American Jews are serving their
country in every branch of military activity and on every
front where American fighting men may be found.
The lengthening list of our heroes and the daily reports
of their exploits are building a brilliant record which will
forever be cherished by us., It is important that this record
should be compiled as accurately as possible
and preserved as an authentic memorial to
their loyalty, devotion and sacrifice.
The historical value of such a register
is obvious. Aside, from its civic significance
and its communal need, it is an important
morale-builder for us as Jews. It is a power-
ful challenge to our traducers and an incon-
trovertible answer to our critics. These vital
statistics painstakingly prepared and imme=
diately available will strengthen us against
any situation, come what may.
Mr. Rubiner
A campaign for complete information to assemble the
record will shortly go into full swing. Primarily it is intended
to determine the number and proportion of Jews of our
community in the armed forces as well as their honors,
citations and achievements. The list will also reveal the
casualties, including deaths, missing, wounded and prisoners.
The record will be daily maintained by statistical ex-
perts to reflect subsequent changes and additions. Similar
campaigns have been launched in all other communities
throughout the country.
The results of this exploration, when finally compiled,
will be filed not only locally but with the Bureau of War
Records of the National Jewish Welfare Board. Thirty-five
of the leading national Jewish organizations, representative
citizens as members-at-large, and hundreds of local com-
munity committees are part of =the organization linked in
the:Tlaily operations of the Bureau.
The task of scientifically assembling this information
will require the assistance' of every- member in the corn-
Munity. Let us With pride stand up and be Counted.
