Lt. Julius J. Gutow, 31, of De-
troit, is the recipient of a Silver
Star for gallantry in action dur-
ing Japanese bombing and straf-
ing last July of an American field
hospital in New Guinea.
Lieutenant Gutow is an Army
Medical Corps officer, and has a
brother, Capt. Benjamin R. Gu-
tow, also serving in the Medical
Corps, somewhere in the Pacific.
The citation accompanying the
award praises him for remaining
on duty and continuing to operate
on wounded men despite heavy
bombing. He is the son of Her-
man Gutow of 5634 Maybury
Road.

Sgt. Shiraga, who was chair-
man of the Hillel Council's eval-
uation committee while at Mich-
igan, lost his life on March 22
in an airplane crash at Harlin-
gen, Tex., while serving as a
gunnery instructor.
Rabbi Jehudah M. Cohen, di-
rector of the Hillel Foundation,
has received a communication
from Lt. Col. Lewis H. Kensin-
ger, Commandant of the Harlin-
gen Army Gunnery School, a
portion of which reads as fol-
lows:
"Sergeant Shiraga was an . ef-
ficient, well-liked young man
whose death was a shock to
all who knew him here. His
