Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president
of the Jewish Agency for Pales-
tine, will be guest of honor at
the National Conference for Pal-
estine in Philadelphia, May 1 and
2, it was announced this week
by Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, nation-
al chairman of United Palestine
Appeal, under whose auspices the
conference will be held.

(Abraham Srere, president of
the Jewish Welfare Federation
of Detroit, and Abraham Coop-
er, president of the Zionist
Organization of Detroit, will
be the local delegates to the
conference, it was announced.
this week.)

Dr. Silver said that the guest
of honor will have a message of
unusual importance for the large
.number of delegates who will
attend the Conference to associ-
ate themselves with its purpose
to pledge wartime support to the
Yishuv, and to consider the post-
war requirements of the Jewish
National Home.
The keynote address will be
delivered Saturday night by Dr.
Silver, whose statements at the
'National Conferences have come
to be looked forward to as the
most vital and eloquent expres-
sions of American Jewry's link
to the upbuilding of the Jewish
National Home. There will be
other sessions on Sunday morn-
ing, at luncheons and in the
afternoon, closing with the ban-
quet session Sunday evening.
Among the highlights of the
conference program, which was
arranged by a committee headed
by William H. Sylk of Philadel-
phia, will be an address by Dr.
Ernst Bergman, scientist and as-
sistant director of the Daniel
Sieff Chemical Institute at Reho-
voth.

Bar Group Turns
Down Negro, Judge
Goldstein Quits

NEW YORK (JPS)—Because
the American Bar Association
refused to take action on the ap-
plication of New York's Assist-
ant District Attorney Francis
Rivers, a Negro, for membership
in the association, General Ses-
sions Judge Jonah J. Goldstein
submitted his own resignation.
Judge Goldstein, who has been
active in Jewish communal en-
deavors, had recommended Riv-
ers, a Yale Phi Beta Kappa, for
membership in the association
and became incensed at the fail-
ure of the bar group to act.
Upon being informed that
Judge Goldstein had resigned,
Arthur Garfield Hays, director
of the American Civil Liberties
Union, also joined in the protest
and said in a letter to the Am-
erican Bar Association that "I
am hopeful that the resignations
of Judge Goldstein and myself
may lead hundreds of right-
thinking men to follow our ex-
ample."
