The Festival of Freedom
Passover, the Festival of Freedom which ushered in the
first attempt by any people on record to secure liberty and
justice, is being observed this year with dramatic timeliness.
The entire world is engaged in a struggle for freedom,
and the disenfranchised Jews everywhere, in Nazi-held coun-
tries as well as in other lands, like Algeria and Yemen, once
again turn to the pages of the Haggadah and recount the
story of the Exodus of old, in the hope that-the historic expe-
riences will be repeated in our time.
PasSover brings us neWhope. In more than one sense, it-
serves to renew confidence in Providential powers among all
peoples. The Festival of Freedom is an occasion to arouSe•
again the indestructible faith which has kept our people aliv'e
throughout..the centuries.
As in the Passover of old, we also have certain obliga-
tions in the process of seeking the rebirth of freedom for all
mankind. We have an important part to. play in the struggle
for the return to justice and liberty. I -;
Our role is carved for us on the battlefield, in civilian life,
as Americans and as Jews. Together with our American fel-
low citizens our sons are fighting on all fronts and our people.
here are aiding in civilian defense efforts- and in giving all
necessary assistance to our Government.
As Jews, we must uphold established traditions of adher-
ing to faith while we carry on our own battle to guarantee .
the rights of our fellow Jews everywhere.
. Passover is the occasion for increased participation in the
war effort through the purchase of ever larger amounts of
War Bonds. It is the occasion for increased efforts in behalf
of all undertakings to assure the retention of confidence and
the strengthening of the morale of our people in this country.
The Festival of Freedom is also the occasion for reaffirm-
ing our determination to carry on our internal efforts to the
end that the peoples of the world may listen to our demands'
for the recognition of the rights of our people everywhere, in• - •
cludina just adherence to pledges for the rederription. of Pales;-
b granting of full equality :to .Jews wherever they
tine and
may live.
May this Festival of Freedom mark the true beginning of
the era of emancipation for all mankind: -

Editor's Note: The Editor of The J - ewish News quotes the date
of Exodus on the Jewish Calendar as 1290, after consultation with
Rabbi Morris Adler of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, who wrote a
prize essay on the chronological dates of Passover while he was a
student at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Rabbi
Adler calls our attention to differences of opinion on the date of
Exodus. Prof. A. S. Yahudah, the eminent scholar who is now a
member of the faculty of Yeshivah College in New York and who
was formerly in Spain, believes it was in the year 1470 on our cal-
endar. Dr. Joseph H. Hertz, Chief Rabbi of the Jewish communities
of the British Empire, gives the date as the 13th century in his Com-
mentary on the Book of Exodus, and later, in the Book of Numbers,
he lists the date as 14th Century. Rabbi Adler, however, is inclined
to accept the view of Prof. William S. Albright of Johns Hopkins
University, one of the most eminent Christian authorities on
Semitics, who gives the date as approximately 1290.
The Libermans of Manistique
There have been so many unfair and thoroughly un-
pleasant references to Jews in the past few weeks in the
Congressional Record that a statement about the Libermans
of Manistique served to relieve the tension.
The first page of the Congressional Record of March 30
carried a significant statement by Congressman Bradley of
Michigan which reads as follows:
Mr. BRADLEY of Michigan. Mr. Sneaker, I am very proud
to state that I represent Manistique, Mich. The following is a
quotation from the Jewish Veterans' magazine of January
1943. It reads as follows:
100-PERCENT SERVICE
The Jewish patriotic record in Manistique, Mich., is 100
percent and then some.
There's just one Jewish family there, the Libermans', and
this is their record:
Members in the service:
Capt. Louis E. Liberman, with the Air Force in England.
Pilot Lt. James Liberman.
Lt. Ben Liberman, Coast Artillery.
Pvt. (1st cl.) Peter Liberman, Army.
Corp. Sam Liberman, Army.
Pvt. Herman Liberman, Army.
-Morris Liberman, who has just enlisted in the Army.
Their sister holds a position connected with the war effort,
and her husband, Dr. David E. Schlonsky, is attached to the
Chemical Warfare Division.
Mr. and Mrs. Liberman came here from Vilna, Lithuania,
35 years ago, and have 10 children.
Mrs. Liberman has been compared to Hannah of old, that
great Jewish mother who let her 7 sons die rather than render
divine homage to the tyrant Antiochus. She said, "I sent them
forth with a feeling of sorrow, yes, but also pride. At least I
know my boys have a chance for their lives. I pray to God
that they return victorious."
Within a few days the house-
hold of Israel will celebrate the
Feast of Passover. The stirring
memories of the deliverance of
our remote an-
cestors from
Egyptian bond-
age are freighted
this year with a
special message
of hope and

demption that comes from the
Jewish past to the tormented
Jews of Europe of today ..must
soon be actualized or it will be
too late. Moral man must work
with God to win this salvation.
It is one of the tragic ironies of
history that the Jew, who con-
tributed the first comprehensive
insight into the nature of free-
dom, should after three thousand
years of history, find himself ar-
rayed against the most brutal and
cynical exponent of human sla-
very that the world has ever
known. And yet,' it is the Jewish
conception of freedom .which has
informed the ascending spirit of
WeStern civilization. The great-
est protagonists of human liber-
ties in the world have been
inspired by the teachers and
prophets of the Old Testament.
Jefferson — Foe of Tyranny
A magnificent illustration of
this truth is provided by Thomas
Jefferson, whose two hundredth
anniversary has been recently
commemorated. Jefferson was
the implacable foe of tyranny in
every form. He was the first man
in the United States to introduce
a bill in its legislative -halls to
outlaw slavery. He believed that
the inalienable rights of man
were not dependent for their
existence upon the a r b i t r a r y
whim of an individual or a state.
The body, the mind, and the soul
of man must be unfettered. Only
then can he be assured of maxi-
mum self-development and be
prepared to make his finest con-
tributions to the welfare of
society as a whole.
Jefferson, then, belongs to that
unique line of emancipators that
traces its origin back to Moses.
Is it too much to hope that in
this hour of supreme agony for
so many millions, that the spirit
of a Moses or a Thomas. Jeffer-
son will inform the decisions of
those men who have now become
the trustees of human freedom
throughout the world?
The Armies of Redemption

Nations have become the armies

Hitler terror. However,- until the
day of victory dawns, something
must be done for the Jews who

ernmental Conference on Refu-
gees,. which is to meet. at . Ber-
muda, must act quickly, :deci-
sively, and helpfully if they are

Let this statement be recorded so that as many Amer-
icans as possible may read it for two reasons:
1. As proof that there are no exceptions to the rule, and
that members of all denominations and nationality groups
contribute their full share towards the armed forces of the
United States; and that
2. The sense of decency and the American ideal of fair
play is certain to predominate against those who seek to

Congressman Bradley spoke of the patriotic record of the

A measure like the one proposed in the Rhode Island
state legislature ought to be a forerunner of national legisla- .

But the very least that can be done is to compel those
who spread poisonous propaganda to make themselves known.
The Rhode Island proposal appears to us to be in the interest,
of good government and fair play.
