IMPRESSIONS

Judge, Proskauer, president of the Am-
erican Jewish Committee, has made quite
a hit with the editors, publishers and
leading writers of the Jewish daily press
. . At an intimate gathering this .week
he revealed himself as a great spokesman
for the Jewish cause . .. It was a heart-
to-heart talk in which the Jewish editors
and the head of the American Jewish
Committee took a great liking to each
other . • What the participants liked
most was the frankness and sincerity
with which Judge Proskauer outlined his
attitude on the major and complicated
problems in Jewish life . . . Many of
them admitted that there is logic in Mr.
Proskauer's attitude towards Palestine
. . . The policy of the American Jewish
Committee on the Palestine. issue
emerged in quite a new light after the
interpretation by Judge Proskauer of the
statement on Palestine adopted at the
annual meeting of the Committee . . .
The group was also very much impressed
by Judge Proskauer's views on the Am-
erican Jewish Assembly, on unity in
American-Jewish life, on action in Wash-
ington for the rescue of Jews from Nazi-
held lands, and on other important mat-
ters . . . Another Jewish leader who
made an excellent impression on editors
of the New York Jewish press is 'Adolph
Rosenberg, president of the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations . . .
Most of the New York editors met him
for the first time, and after hearing his
intimate talk on American Jewish prob-
lems, admitted that it was their loss not
to have met this Cincinnati notable be-
fore.

SIDELIGHTS

At least one Jewish organization in
America has received a letter from a
central Jewish body in Rumania asking
Jews in the democracies to pay attention
to the Rumanian offer to permit Jews to
leave the country . . . This letter, which
reached the United States through a
neutral country, discloses that a Ruman-
ian•ex-senator is now in Turkey with the,
details of the offer .. . Interested bodies
in a neutral European country are now
trying to contact the Rumanian ex-legis-_
lator in order to find out what the plans
actually are ... The letter from Rumania,
which was signed by a responsible Jew-
ish person in Bucharest, emphasized that
the plan "is not a second Struma affair,"
thus indicating that transportation would
be available if the Rumanian proposals
are accepted.

A 13-point program for urgent and ef-
fective relief-and-rescue work for Jews
in Nazi Europe has been prepared by the
Joint Committee on the European Emerg-
ency Jewish Situation which is composed
of all major central Jewish organiza-
tions . . The presidium of this new
Jewish body is a perfect example of Am-
erican Jewish unity . . . Its members are
Judge Joseph M. Proskauer, president of
the American Jewish Committee, Dr.
Stephen S. Wise, president of the Am-
erican Jewish Congress, Henry Monsky,
president of the Bnai Brith, and Adolph
Held, president of the Jewish Labor
Committee.

Help Wage the War and
Have a Share in Victory

The Second War Loan Drive is on
right now. It is a drive to raise through
the sale of War Bonds the sum of $13,-
000,000 ; 000. Michigan's share of this
amount is $362,500,000.

That sounds like a lot of money . .
but it costs money to wage a war, and
all of us must contribute toward meeting
this cost by loaning our money to the
Government. We are not asked to give
it to the Government, only to loan it, and
our principal will be repaid to us with
interest.
If we should lose the war . . . and
there isn't any guarantee that we can't
lose it . . . our money would be worth
nothing. The enemy would take over the
country and everything that we have
away from us. By everything we do not
alone mean our worldly possessions, but
our very lives and liberties.
There are but two weeks left for you
to d, your part in the April drive for the
$13,000,000,000 to finance the war effort.
Get in touch with one of "The Gallant
60,000 of Michigan" here and give your
subscription to the Second War Loan.
The dollars you lend may save a life.

A Passover Guest Editorial

The New Bond Drive
—A Symbol of Our Freedom

By HENRY WINEMAN

I consider it an historic coincidence that the greatest civilian effort
on record to assure decisive victory for the democracies takes place
during the Passover festival.
I refer to the national $13,000,000,000 War
Bond drive, in which we of the state of Michigan
are asked to subscribe $362,500,000.
For Jews, this drive is a symbol of our
freedom.
More than 350,000 Jews are already enlisted in
the armed forces of the United States.
At least 5,000 names of Detroit Jews in serv-
ice have already been compiled here.
This means that at least one in every 15 Jews
in the American population is in a U. S. uniform.
The rest must uphold the hands of our fight-
Henry Winernan
ing men.
Passover, the foundation of all movements for freedom in human
history, carries the message to every one of us to provide the necessary
means with which our Government is to carry on the battle for justice
in the world.
I am confident that the message of the Jewish people, as we
observe the Passover, will be that we give as full a measure of
civilian support to our Government's war effort as our fighting men
are giving in active service.
"Service" is the watchword of our people today. Through service
we will succeed in bringing order in the world. Let every one of us
enlist for service, so that the home front may generate the power
necessary for a complete and speedy victory of right and reason over
might and paganism.

NEWSPAPER STUFF
Congratulations to Dorothy S. Backer,
imaginative publisher of the New York
Post . She has become the talk of
newspapermen everywhere because of
her achievement in transforming this
New York paper into a paying proposi-
tion . . . An especially big scoop was her
grabbing of Edgar Ansel Mowrer, ace of
foreign correspondents, as a special
writer for the Post on international sub-
jects . . . That big adv. recently put out
by II Progresso Italo-Americano set forth
the ideals of democracy and hit anti-
Semitism on the nose.

HEBRA1ST NEWS
The theatrical group of the Histadruth
Ivrith, the national organization for the
Hebrew 'language in this country, has
some very 'fine talent . . Particularly
fine is its dancing group, of which
Corinne Chochem is the director . . . The
group has studied quietly for the past
six years, and the intimate performance
they gave at the Little Theatre of New
York's Hunter College a couple of weeks
ago was a revelation to the few privileg-
ed to see it.

Pierre van Paassen predicts that the
Pan-Arab Conference to take place in
Egypt, and called with the approval of
the British government, may prove the
beginning of a serious attempt to under-
mine Jewish hopes for a legally assured
homeland in Palestine after the war . . .
Right now, he says, is the time to start
a ruthless campaign against such a move.
By the time you read this Moshe Sher-
tok, will be back in Palestine . . . One
of the last visits that Shertok paid while
in this country was to Maxim Litvinov,
Soviet Ambassador to Washington, to
whom the head of the Jewish Agency's
political division was introduced by Dr.
Nahum Goldman.
Don't miss Joseph Brainin's article in
the current issue of The Protestant En-
titled "Anti-Semitism Triumphant". It
makes some very startling revelations.
We hear that Supreme Court Justice
Roberts will be a leading figure at that
Bermuda Conference.
Secretary of the Treasury Henry Mor-
genthau wants it clearly understood that
the Treasury's -war bond ad showing a
dachshund bearing Hitler's mug was not
meant to cast any aspersions on the
canine breed, and that, indeed, the Mor-
genthau household includes a dachshund
of whom the entire family is very fond.
BOOKS AND AUTHORS
We want to assure Ida S. Zelson of
St. Louis, and many others who have
expressed puzzlement, that novelist
Franz Werfel has not renounced the Jew-
ish faith . . . That letter of his published
in Time magazine a couple of months
ago gave rise to considerable mistinder-
standing on this score, but that was be-

distress and sorrows of large numbers of
our people. With each passing year, the

Jewish life under the Nazi regime.

Heard in
the Lobbies

By DAVID DEUTSCH

WASHINGTON OVERTONES
There is a widespread clamor among
some Jews who think that it's "the other
Jew" who breeds anti-Semitism that na-
tional Jewish organizations should at
once undertake to seek the removal of
Jews from government pay rolls, especial-
ly "dark-complected, curly-haired, Phi-
Beta-Kappa-wearing Jews" on OPA and
similar staffs who so tur-r-ibly "embar-
rass" some local Jews by the rigorous
way in which they enforce Federal regu-
lations vis-a-vis non-Jewish violators .. „
Arthur Hays Sulzberger, who used to
complain so bitterly about "Jews in poli-
tics," is one of the strongest behind-the-
scenes counsellors against the project of
the American Jewish Assembly. He
thinks it would be a weapon in the hands
of the anti-Semites. Did Mr. Sulzberger
ever figure that one of the best ways to
disarm the anti-Semites is to quit as pub-
lisher of the New York Times?
Report has it that Judge Louis Levin-
thal is grooming Dr. Israel Goldstein as
his successor as president of. .the Zionist
Organization. The multiple-post rabbi is
reported to have wide support.

NEGROES AND JEWS

The resignation of Judge Jonah Gold-
stein of New York froM the American
Bar Association becauSe a Negro lawyer
friend of his was'ibeing given the black-
ball reminds me of the fact that.. the
Negro republic _of. Liberia was_ estab-
lished by an American Jew . . . Liberia
recently came into the news when Presi-
dent Roosevelt was seen riding in a jeep
alongside the Negro president of the Af-
rican country . . . Yehudi Ashmun was
the Jew who, in 1821, got together a
number of Jewish and Christian friends
to set up the American Colonization So-
ciety. Their aim was to create an inde-
pendent state for freed Negro slaves.
(Jews didn't mind an independent State
those days—as -long as it was for Ne-
groes, not other Jews) . . . Ashmun de-
voted years of his life to the project, in
fact was in Liberia from 1822 to 1828 to
get the project started • . But like Jews
after the last war who saw no reason to
hurry to Palestine, few .Negroes wanted
to take advantage of the opportunity for
freedom offered to them' . . . Ashmun re-
turned to the United States a disappoint-
ed man—but .-wherever he is today he
should be happy that Liberia .is getting
along nicely these days.

. While millions of our people are . still
subject to the peril of annihilation by the
modern Pharaoh, the recent victories of
the United Nations fOrces have' definitely
opened up the road to liberation for our
people and for all other peoples who
have been the prisoners of the Nazi op- PERSONALITIES.
