A Bouquet From a Serviceman
Editor, The Jewish News:
One of the finest and most
cherished gifts I have received
since becoming attached to our
armed forces was a subscription
to The Jewish News, given to
me by Harry Schumer.
It rejuvenates my morale
every week when I have an op-
portunity to read about the ac-
tivities of my friends at home.
The best of luck and contin-
ued success to you.

CHILDREN'S
CORNER

Dear Boys and Girls:
Only ten days remain before
Passover.
This great festival of freedom
has great significance for all of
us at this time.
Millions of our people are en-
slaved in countries that are held
by the Nazis. But we are free,
and they therefore have reason
to hope that they, too, will soon
be free—with the .help of the
democratic nations; and with our
'help.
Next week, this column will
be devoted to Passover: .
In. - today'S column I aril sharing
with you, excerpts from the essays
On "What the Sabbath Means to
Me" which won prizes in the con-
test conducted by the Women's
League for Sabbath Observance.
The four English prize-winning
essays were written by Morton
Zieve and Shirley Jane Frank,
senior students in the Shaarey
Zedek religious school; Edwin
Levinson of Bnai David School
and Dolores Kay of the Bnai
Moshe School. Drora Selesny of
the United Hebrew Schools wrote
the Hebrew prize-winning essay.
A pleasant Sabbath to you all.

Ask Voice at Rescue Parley

(Continued from Page 3)
8. Assurances must be given to neutral countries concerning
the maintenance of any refugees they admit.
9. International machinery should be set up to speed the
rescue of the Jews.
10. Nationals of the United Nations should be exchanged
for nationals of the Axis powers.
11. Approach the British Dominions and Latin America for
assistance in sheltering the refugees.
12. Approach Germany and her satellite states with the
proposal that they allow the Jews, particularly children, to
leave.

Palestine Jews Present Proposals to Conference

JERUSALEM, (JTA)—A number of proposals for con-

sideration by the forthcoming Anglo-American conference
on refugees scheduled to be held in Bermuda, were advanced
here in behalf of the Jews of Palestine, by Isaac Ben-Zvi,
president of the Jewish National Council.
Mr. Ben-Zvi said that the Allied governments will not
be able to state that they did everything possible if they
continue to close their eyes to the fact that Palestine can
absorb tens of thousands of Jewish victims from Nazi coun-
tries.

U. S. Contact With Other Nations On Refugees

. WASHINGTON, (JTA)—Britain and the United States

are keeping in close touch with potential "haven" countries,
especially those of Latin America, in preparation for the
conference in Bermuda, Secretary of State Hull said this
week.

the fruits of their labor, and to
come closer to God. Especially
in these times, as life becomes
daily more hurried and compli-
cated, its value cannot be over-
estimated.
It is fitting that amid the hurry
and bustle of everyday life, one
day should be set aside for prayer
and thanksgiving to God. This is
the time to reflect on the week's
happenings and to regain one's
perspective and sense of values.
This is perhaps one of the most
important aspects of the Sabbath.

Dolores Kay's Essay

We should all "Remember the
Sabbath Day and keep it Holy,"
in order to be good Jews.
To me the Sabbath day is a
day of joy and happiness, worship
and rest. It is riot a day of un-
happineSs or continued argument.
The Sabbath is also r. day to
enjoy yourself by reading an in-
teresting book or studying a Sun-
day School lesson. By studying,
I mean vead.ing without writing
as you really shouldn't write on
the Sabbath.
By attending services whenever
possible we learn more about why
we "Remember the Sabbath Day
and keep it Holy," so that we
children can really appreciate the
Sabbath Day.

Edwin Lewinson's Essay

Every Friday night just about
sundown I say my evening pray-
ers. On most Saturday mornings
I go to the Synagogue. For the
rest of the day I try to obey the
thirty-nine articles.
Now let us debate the reasons
why I shouldn't complain. I go
to school five days a week, and
to Sunday School the sixth. I
type, write and ride on all six
of the others. Is it not right that
I should rest on one. day of the
week? I owe reverence to the
Lord. That is a reason that -far
overshadows the reasons for
complaining. •Our ancestors have
preserved the Sabbath for thous-
tends of years. Another count for
my not complaining.

How simple the word "rest"—
how complex its meanings. To
me it means no Algebra prob-
lems to do—it means no piano to
practice—in short, it means no
demands upon me. But the most
important thing that the Sabbath
means to me is that it is the one
day of the week our family is
united. For it is this unity of
family—this feeling of such a
common unity with millions of
JeWs everywhere that brings
about the complete rest, and rev-
erent beauty of the Sabbath. For
it is the Sabbath=one - of the
greatest values and-contributions
of Judaism to the world—that
has been the most influential fac-
the
tor in keeping Judaism alive for
Mr. and Mrs. E. Lesowoder this
over 4,000 years. Let us—"Re-
