Rescue Action Launched

Dr. Solomon Goldman Will Be Principal Speaker; Jacob Borman Continues to Set Joint Group for European Jewish Affairs Marks First Step

Labor Zionist Affair
With Dr. Solomon Goldman of Chicago as principal
speaker, and an eminent group of musicians participating in
the program, the 1943 Gewerkshaften campaign will close
this Sunday evening, at a rally of contributors and workers,
at the Detroit Institute of Art.
Morris L. Schaver, chairman of this year's labor Zionist
drive, announced this week that
in addition to the program listed
last week, Jacob Ben-Ami, emi-
nent Yiddish actor, will be pre-
sented in a specially arranged
presentation of the best selections
from the plays in which he has
starred throughout the world.
Musical Program
The musical program will fea-
ture a trio consisting of Katja.
Andy, pianist; Jascha Schwartz-
man, cellist, and Henry Siegl,
violinist.
In addition, Emma Shever, De-
troit soprano, will appear in a
group of Hebrew and Yiddish
songs.
Mr. Schaver announced this
week that the quota of $50,000 is
nearing completion, setting a new
record for collections here for
the labor Zionist movement.
Ssling to Speak
Sunday's rally also will be ad-
dressed briefly by Meyer Sesling
of Palestine, who directed the
drive in Detroit.
Doors will be opened at 7:30
p. m. and the program will start
at 8:30 o'clock.
The singing of the national
anthems will open the program.
Mrs. Shever on Tour
Mrs. Shever, who will be fea-
tured as soloist, appeared Wed-
nesday at the event sponsored
by the Chicago branch of the
Yiddisher Wissenshaftlicher In-
stitute, Dr. Goldman having been
the guest speaker. On April 21,
Mrs. Shever will appear in con-
cert in Philadelphia, and on
April 24 she will give a recital
in Boston.
The concluding rally of work-
ers, held Thursday evening at
Lachar's, was addressed by Dr.
David Rebelsky, director of the
Chicago Gewerkshaften cam-
paign.
Lt. Handler's Friend
To Run Camp Tamakwa
Lt. Lou• Handler's Camp Tam-
akwa has been entrusted this
year • to his friend and camping
associate, Irwin Haladner • of
Toronto. He has visited Detroit
in the interest of this year's
camping program among coun-
selors and campers.
Mr. Haladner will initiate Lt.
Handler's plans of a girls' camp
at Tamakwa this season and the
camp will be .coeducational. Mr.
Haladner has been associated
with camps in Algonquin Park
for many years.

Harry Cohen, chairman of the
membership drive of the Zionist
Organization of Detroit, stated
this week that Dr. Joseph Star-
man, who is secretary of Congre-
gation Bnai Moshe, is rendering
invaluable service in the cam-
paign.

WASHINGTON (JPS)—The Joint Emergency Commit-
tee for European Jewish Affairs, which embraces the major
Jewish organizations, was sponsor along with 40 local organ-
izations of a public rally at the Hotel Statler here, marking
its first step to arouse the American people to the need for
immediate rescue of Jews of Europe.

Dinner Sunday

Detroit Auxiliary of Los
Angeles Sanatorium announces
that its invitation to the 16th an-
niversary donor dinner, at the
Fort Wayne Hotel this Sunday
evening, has met a generous res-
ponse from organizations and in-
dividuals.
There will be a musical pro-
gram, with dancing after the
dinner arrangements, according
to Nathan R. Epstein, president
of the Auxiliary.
Mr. Epstein reports that the
Detroit organization has assisted
in extending help to the. 10,000
consumptives who have been
hospitalized at the Los Angeles
Sanatorium, its Ex - Patients
Home, Children's and Adult Clin-
ics and the Out-Patient Depart-
ment, during the past 16 years.
Many patients have been sent to
the sanatorium from Detroit.
Officers of the Detroit aux-
iliary, besides Mr. Epstein, are:
Harris T. Glickman, vice presi-
dent; James J. Simon, financial
secretary; Sam Mansewich, re-
ct5rding secretary; Morris Torgow,

Dr. S. Kleinman is the medical
director.
Dr. Stephen S. Wise, acting as
spokesman for the committee, on
which are represented the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee, the Am-
erican Jewish Congress, Bnai
Brith, Jewish Labor Committee,
Synagogue Council of America,
Agudath Israel, Union of Ortho-
dox Rabbis, and the American
Emergency Committee for Zionist
Affairs, with the expected addi-
tion soon of important fund-rais-
ing bodies, submitted a 12-point
program which previously had
been presented to the State De-
partment.
Show the Way
Expressing support of the pro-
gram, Senator Alben W. Barkley,
majority leader of the Senate,
said: "Let our country show the
way and let all other United
Nations and neutral countries
soon follow, by dedicating itself
anew as a temporary sanctuary
for the victims of Nazi Germany.
Let us displace political consid-
erations with humanitarian needs
by opening the doors of Palestine
for as many as the country can
absorb."
The program adopted by the
meeting called for revision of
existing Governmental procedure
for admission of refugees; for
entry. of thousands into other
lands; creation of an intergov-.
ernmental agency to handle the
problem; and organization of a
feeding system for those who
could not escape.
