Children Express Grief
In Letter to President

Message to Mr. Roosevelt Urges Him to Arrange Rescue
of Jews in Europe; Day of Sorrow Assemblies
Here Draw Crowds

The solemn and impressive gatherings of children attend-
ing the Jewish schools of Detroit, held at the Shaarey Zedek
and Temple Israel last Sunday, resolved to send a message
to President Roosevelt expressing their grief over the plight
of Jews in Nazi-held territories and pleading with him to
arrange for the rescue of children for settlement in Palestine

and other havens of refuge.
Signed by Pupil
The letter, signed by Herman
N. Robinson, a pupil of the
United Hebrew Schools, was
sent in behalf of the students of
the following schools:
United Hebrew Schools,
Shaarey Zedek Religious School,
Temple Israel Religious School,
Bnai David Religious School,
Sholom Aleichem Schools, Arbei-
ter Ring Schools, Farband
Schools, Yeshivah Beth Yehuda,
Private Schools, Intermediate
Youth Groups of the Jewish
Community Center, AZA (Junior
Bnai Brith), Young Judeans,
Zionist Youth Council and Young
Israel Youth Groups.
The Letter—
The letter reads as follows:
Dear Friend:
"We, Jewish children of De-
troit, have gathered on this Sun-
day morning, April 4, 1943, to
observe a day of mourning for
our brothers and sisters of the
countries of Nazi-occupied Eu-
rope who have been tortured
and have been put to death be-
cause they are Jews.
"We know that you have often
expressed your own personal
feeling and the sympathy of the
whole American nation, for our
people in the awful calamity
which has befallen us.
"We, therefore, turn to you in
our grief and ask you to take
the quickest action you possibly
can to rescue our brothers and
sisters. Please help all of those
who can possibly escape to find
shelter in neutral countries and
please make it possible for them
to find permanent homes in Pal-
estine. Please open the gates of
America wide for all who can
possibly reach the shores of this
land of freedom and call upon
our allies to open the gates of
their countries also.
"Perhaps the enemy could be
persuaded to arrange to let the
little children go. If so, we look
to you to make every effort to
arrange this rescue of the chil-
dren and to open the gates of
Palestine and other countries for
their- reception.
'We hope that you will not al-
low Jewish people to be perse-

cuted or to be denied their free-
dom and equality in any coun-
tries reconquered from the
enemy by the American flag,
such as the countries of North
Africa.
"We pray for the victory of
the United Nations which will
bring freedom to all men and
make all men brothers.
"Looking forward to your re-
ply to our letter, we are
Your young friends."
Refugee Children
The two assemblies were filled
to overflowing. A number of
refugee children participated in
the programs describing their
experiences in Germany prior to
their escape to this country.
Rabbis and teachers partici-
pated in the programs at which
a declaration of sorrow, faith
and hope was read to the assem-
bly.
The following pledge was
taken by all present:
"With all our hearts, we re-
solve never to forget our broth-
ers and sisters in the lands across
the seas, whose innocent lives
have been taken by the wicked
enemy. We will remember their
martyrdom, and the great ideals
for which they died. We recall
with solemn pride that our be-
loved country, and all the United
Nations, are today doing battle
for the same ideals.
"We proclaim our faith that
Victory, which is sure to come,
will establish brotherhood, free-
dom, and justice among all the
peoples of the earth, and will
bring new hope and redemption
to the Jewish people every-
where. We resolve to the best of
our ability to help heal the
wounds of our people and to
help realize the ideals for which
this war is fought".

Committee this week extended
