Essay Contest
Winners Named

Win Top Prizes; Jewish
News To Print Best

Five winners in the essay con-
test sponsored by the Women's
League for Sabbath Observance
on the topic "What the Sabbath
Means to a Jewish Child" were
announced this week as follows:
First prize, Morton Zieve; se-
cond prize, Shirley Jane Frank;
both are Shaarey Zedek pupils.
In the junior division the first
prize winner is Edwin Lewinson
of Bnai David Religious School,
and second prize winner is De-
lores Kay of the Bnai Moshe
Religious School.
The prize for the best Hebrew
essay went • to Drora Selesny, of
the United Hebrew Schools.
The contest will be an annual
affair of ' the Women's League
for Sabbath Observance. Judges
were Rabbi Joshua S. Sperka,
Rabbi Max J. Wohlgelernter,
Theodore Baruch and Morris
Lachover.
Prize winning essays will be
published in The Jewish News.
Winners also will be heard on
Altman's Radio Hour soon.
Public presentation of medals
will be made within the next
two weeks.

Dedicate Delray
Synagogue War Honor
Roll This Sunday

A war honor roll of approxi-
mately 600 men in the service
from the downriver section will
be dedicated at special ceremonies
to take place at 3:30 p. m. this
Sunday at the Delray Congrega-
tion, 8124 Burden.
Philip Slomovitz, editor of The
Jewish News, and Harry Pasko,
witz, commander of the Down-
river Jewish War Veterans, will
be the guest speakers. - Louis
Tischler will be chairman and
Rabbi Ernest Greenfield will con-
duct the services and will read
special prayers.

Schwarz to Head
Bnai Moshe Club

Robert Schwarz was elected
president of Bnai Moshe Men's
Club at the annual meeting on
March 23. He succeeds Edmund
Labe.
Ernest Labe was chosen vice-
president; Morton Katz, treasur-
er; Louis Kepes, re-elected sec-
retary. New board members are:
Eugene Weiss, Edmund Labe,
Sam Freedman and Carl Rozner.
The new officers will be in-
stalled April 14.

Memorial to Mrs. Segal
Advanced to April 5

The memorial meeting in trib-
ute to the late Mrs. Taube Segal,
who was one of the leading
workers in the Mizrachi women's
ranks here, will be held on Mon-
day, April 5, at 1 p. m., at the
Shaarey Zedek, instead of Tues-
day, as previously planned.
Sisters of Zion Mizrachi, un-
der whose auspices the memorial
meeting will be held, announced
that the postponement is occa-
sioned by the occurrence of Rosh
Chodesh Nisan on Tuesday.
Rabbi Joshua S. Sperka will
deliver the memorial address.

Philomathic Debating Club se-
lected Lawrence Arden, George
Rembaum, Mickey Rosenthal,
Donald Schiff, Louis Silverstein
and Morton Zieve as participants
in the annual model meeting. Al-
ternates are Gilbert Sell and
Sheldon Selesnick. On April 4,
Rabbi Morris Adler will address
the club at the Shaarey Zedek.

Of Army Camp Visit

"Three Men in an Army Camp"
will be the subject of Rabbi
Morris Adler's sermon at the
Sabbath morning services at
Shaarey Zedek.
Rabbi Adler spent a week in
one of the largest camps in the
country, living in the barracks,
meeting the soldiers and learn-
ing their reactions. He was a
member of a trio which included
a Catholic priest, Fr. William
Ryan, professor of philosophy,
St. Louis Univ., and Dr. Beverly
Boyd, Protestant minister from
Richmond.
Rabbi Adler will describe his
impressions of this tour in his
Sabbath sermon.

Mrs. Holtzman's Kin

JUNIOR CONGREGATION
OF SHAAREY ZEDEK
The regular service of the
Junior Congregation of Shaarey
Zedek will be held on the Sab-
bath, April 3, at 9:30 a. m. in the
Kate Frank Memorial Building.
Sheldon Lutz will act as Ba'al
Koreh and Myron Rosenthal as
Cantor. Fayette Singer will lead
the reading of the Ashrey.

An outstanding example of a
Jewish contribution to national
patriotism occurred Sunda y,
March 21, with the presentation
of an American Flag by the
State Department of Michigan of
the Jewish War Veterans, at Fort
Custer, with the co-operation of
the Jewish Welfare Board of
Battle Creek, of which Samuel
Kurzon is director.
Starting at 11 a. m. at the
parade grounds of the 1616th
Service unit, the Army personnel
stood in platoon formation head-
ed by Col. Stenjem, commander
of the service unit, to receive
the Flag from State Commander
Samuel J. Rhodes of the Jewish
War Veterans.
Present at the ceremony was
Col. Shank, post commander at
Fort Custer.
A large attendance of Jewish
War Veterans was present, in
eluding members from Flint and
Wyandotte.
Members of the Jewish War
Veterans' Ladies Auxiliary spent
the day at the USO West Michi-
gan Club in Battle Creek and
visited soldiers at the Percy Jones
General Hospital.
Before the group left for Fort
Custer, a preliminary ceremony
was staged in the auditorium of
the USO club, as the War Vet-
erans lined up with their flag
and banner, which was blessed
by Rabbi William B. Silverman
of Battle Creek.

300 Soldiers Attend
Purim Holiday Fete

More than 300 Jewish soldiers
from Fort Custer and Percy'
Jones General Hospital were
guests of the Battle Creek USO
at a Purim Holiday program of
dinner and entertainment Sun-
day, March 21.
With traditional Purim foods
provided by the Detroit Jewish,
community, the Battle Creek
Jewish War Veterans' Auxiliary
of Detroit, the event was one of
the largest social functions for
servicemen ever held in Battle
Creek.

Detroit Lodge No. 55, Knights
of Pythias, gave the third in a
series of entertainments for men
in the armed forces when 100
sailors were provided an evening
of music and dancing at Grosse
Ile on March 30. Sidney L. Alex-
ander is acting chancellor corn-
mander of the Detroit Lodge.

Spring Concert Held
By Herzl Lodge

Theodor Herzl Lodge 1377,
Bnai Brith, and the Ladies Aux-
iliary were hosts to members and
friends at their first Spring Mu-
sical Concert, held last Monday,
in the lodge rooms, 41 Oak St.,
River Rouge. Henry Siegl, vio-
linist; Henri Goldberg, conduc-
tor of the Liberty Singing So-
ciety of Detroit; Rosa Bassin
Stein, pianist, and Jack Newman,
master of literary recitation,
were on the program. Refresh-
ments were -served by auxiliary.

Neighborhood War Clubs, Area
12, Zone 2, Sector B, are making
a drive for Red Cross blood
donors. Anyone interested, call
the blood donor chairman, Mrs.
Eva Ledermann, NO. 3176, or the
co-chairman, Mrs. Ann Wisotsky,
