Jewish Congress Criticizes Giraud
NEW YORK, (JTA)—The abrogation of the Cremieux
decree of 1870 was severely criticized this week in a joint
statement issued by the American Jewish Congress and
the World Jewish Congress.
Two French legal authorities now in the United States
at the same time challenged Gen. Giraud's power to abro-
gate the Cremieux law. They are Henri Torres, former
French deputy and prominent lawyer, and Paul Jacob, for-
merly of the bar of Mulhouse and now lecturing at the
Institute of Comparative Law of the Ecole Libre des Hautes
Etudes. Both agreed that Giraud, as high commissioner of
North Africa, had exceeded his authority.
The joint statement issued by the American Jewish Con-
gress and the World Jewish Congress reads: "The statement
by Gen. Giraud announcing the abrogation of all racial laws
introduced by Vichy represents a certain advance. Until,
however the decree abolishing these laws has been promul-
gated, the announcement will be simply a declaration of
intentions. Final judgment, therefore, on the statement of
Gen. Giraud, must be reserved until the promulgation of the
decree of abrogation."

Pioneer Women Told
df Palestine Work

Detroit branches of the Pioneer
Women's Organization this week
have received word that the
Working Council of Palestine,
which is supported with funds
raised here, has absorbed within
its institutions 300 new refugee
children last month.
For the further absorption of
refugee children the WWC has
launched a special fund drive
among its 265 clubs in this coun-
try for an initial quota of $50,000.

I have received 18 boxes of

On Dec. 25 the Listening

who is in England, in which
he said he'd appreciate Amer-
ican candy.
The result is noted in the
above quotation from another
of his letters which arrived
this week.
