what is occurring in Jewish ranks. Today, with a decline in the
numbers of the Yiddish reading element, the English-Jewish period-

The fact that these periodicals have not grown to the stature
demanded by our tragic times is an indication of failure on the part
of American Jews to be creative in the most important field—that

erican Jewish Assembly haS been
made contingent on the change
of the name to American Jewish
Conference, in a submission of
two conditions by the American
Jewish Committee, it was learned
following a meeting of the ex-
ecutive committee planning the
nation-wide gathering to formu-
late American Jewry's post-war
aims.
Rabbi James G. Heller of Cin-
cinnati, president of the Central
Conference of American Rabbis,
is said to have made the strong-
est plea for accepting the con-
ditions laid down by the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee. As the

had wished the recognition of
its right to withdraw from the
