European Executive Council of the American Jewish Joint ated agencies held their annual

Distribution Committee.
After 19 months in Europe, Dr.
Schwartz is recognized today as
the best informed man in the
world on the position of our peo-
ple in the war zones. He has visit-
ed France, Switzerland and Eng-
land many times, and made his
headquarters in Lisbon, Portugal.

Audience In Tears
Dr. Schwartz's address, which
moved many in the audience to
tears with its description of the
horrors perpetrated against the
Jews, nevertheless contained a
note of hope.
"What amazes me is not that so
much has been destroyed, but
that so much lives on," Dr.
Schwartz declared. "There is still
a Jewish community carrying on
in Europe, and even in darkest
Poland, Jews continue their ef-
forts to retain Jewish existence
and to assume responsibilities
which often entail great risks to
themselves."
Describing his experiences in
France, where he visited the con-
centration camps, Dr. Schwartz
said that while he read on the
faces of the sufferers the terror
accompanied by fear of being
placed on cattle cars and trans-
ported to Eastern Europe for
slave labor, he nevertheless saw
determination to carry on.
Low Rate of Suicides
He told of having asked a
young man in a concentration
camp why there is such a low
rate of suicides, and he was told:
"It is due to the fact that all
of us live on hopes based on the
encouragement that comes to us
from the powerful American
Jewish community that you will
rescue at least a part of us. There
is hope in every one of us that
we, too, may be saved, and that
hope gives us courage and
strength to carry on."
This, Dr. Schwartz pointed out,

Miss Szold Sees
Hope for 25,000
Youths in Zion

But Negotiations to Bring
4,500 from Bulgaria are
Reported Broken

TEL AVIV (JPS-Palcor) —
Henrietta Szold, 82-year-old
"mother of Youth Aliyah," sees a
hope for bringing at least 25,000
Jewish refugee children into Pal-
estine in the imminent future,
she told a press, conference called
here by the Keren Hayesod.
Still vigorous of spirit with
her tiny frame, Miss Szold re-
viewed the accomplishments of
the Youth Aliyah bureau, which
she heads, during the past nine
years. During that time 8,500
boys and girls received their
training for a constructive life
in the Jewish homeland, while
three fourths of them remained
in rural areas following the com-
pletion of their training, she
pointed out.
She reported that since the
Youth Aliyah program began
nearly $4,000,000 has been spent,
the bulk of this furnished by
Hadassah, Women's Zionist Or-
ganization).

Negotiations Broken
ISTANBUL, (JTA)—The nego-
tiations between the Bulgarian
and the British Governments for
the emigration of 4,000 Jewish
children and 500 adults from
Bulgaria to Palestine have
broken down, it was reported
here this week.
The report was carried by the
