Pictorial description of efforts of
United Jewish Appeal to provide re-
fuge for Nazi victims in Palestine
and the Western Hemisphere and to
make the lot of the persecuted more
bearable.
The substantial sandwich is not only the first
meal for these boys on American soil, but it
is also their first taste of freedom. This picture,
taken on a pier in an Eastern United States
seaport, shows a group of refugee children
who were saved by the Joint Distribution Com-
mittee with funds of the United Jewish Appeal.
The photograph below shows three sisters from
Poland in their new haven in Mexico, after
having been helped by the J. D. C. to com-
plete a journey almost around the world.
Jiere is a study in contrasts. The
life preserver is an appropriate
frame for mother and baby who
were saved by the United Jewish
Appeal. The lower photograph is
an unforgettable portrait of one
of the Nazi victims' grief and
pain. She has lost everything;
These refugees are on the
threshold of freedom, board-
ing a neutral vessel in Lisbon
before their departure for the
United States and other parts
of the Western Hemisphere.
• The United Jewish Appeal
for Refugees, Overseas Needs
and Palestine has provided
The Jewish News with these
photographs.
This youngster's life is
a credit item on the
ledger of the United
Jewish Appeal. The lit-

ern U. S. seaport, having
been brought here by
