will commemorate Jewish sufferings, will be presented to

:day afternoon.
An audience exceeding 3,500 filled the large hall to
capacity, and the gathering unanimously adopted resolutions
:calling for retribution for masscres, the gathering of evi-
dence of guilt against Germany,

the rescuing of victims, especially
children, the setting up of havens
'of refugee for the homeless, ab-
olishment of restrictions on Jew-
:ish immigration to Palestine and
the proclamation of war aims for
the establishment of a free world
with equal rights for all.
Longest Applause
The clause asking for unlimited
-immigration of Jews into Pales-
tine elicited the longest and most
spontaneous applause of the en-
:tire afternoon.
The resolutions, which were
presented by Capt. John J.
O'Brien, read as follows:
"Assembled on the Day of
:Mourni,pg and Protest proclaimed
by the Mayor of the City of De-
! tToit to express our sense of out-
: rage at the deliberate and ruth-
less slaughter of men, women and
children that is being perpetrat-
ed by the Nazi regime, we, citi-
zens of Detroit, appeal to the
President of the United States
and through him to the govern-
ments of all the United Nations
that:
I. The Axis powers shall again
and even more emphatically be
warned that strict retribution will
be exacted of all individuals and
governments who are guilty of
these acts of deliberate torture,
starvation, and massacre.
2. That measures be immedi-
ately taken to gather the evi-
dence against the individuals and
governments involved.
Aid Their Escape
•
3. That every effort be made to
rescue and to aid in their escape
all potential victims of the mas-
sacres who can possibly escape.
4. That an effort be made by
diplomatic means to arrange for
the rescue of children.
5. That neutral countries neigh-
boring on Axis countries shall
be encouraged to give shelter to
all fugitives from the Axis lands.
Neutral countries shall be assured
of the eventual transfer of the
fugitives to other places and
should be internationally guar-
anteed compensation for the ex-
pense involved in sheltering the
fugitives.
6. That all members of the
United Nations open their gates
wide to receive whatever refu-
gees can possibly escape, immi-
gration laws to the contrary being
broadened in view of the great-
ness of the emergency.
Lift Immigration Bars
7. That Great Britain shall im-
mediately abolish her recently
enacted laws restricting immigra-
tion of Jews into the Jewish
Homeland in Palestine, and that
Jewish fugitives from Nazi mas-
sacres shall be welcome in the
Jewish Homeland in as large
numbers as can possibly reach
that proven haven of refuge and
rehabilitation.
7. That the United Nations pro-
ceed to give hope and comfort
to all peoples suffering under
Axis conquest, by openly pro-
claiming our war aims as estab-
lishing a free world, guaranteeing
equal rights for all nations and
for all men."
The Jewish Community Council
of Detroit joined with nationality
and church groups in the city in
sponsoring this rally. Representa-
tives of the sponsoring groups
were on the platform, adding an
impressive note to the gathering.
Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president
of the American Jewish Congress,
and Charles P. Taft, member of
the President's War Relief Con-
trol • Board, were the principal
speakers. Judge Ernest A.
O'Brien was the chairman.
• During the meeting, the
audience was called upon by
the chairman to stand in re-
verential silence in memory
of the afflicted peoples all
over Europe.
Declaring that soldiers in bat-

tle are rewarded not with tears
but with glory, Dr. Wise pointed
out that "our day of mourning is
for the civilians, for them that
have been slain without the privi-
lege of defending themselves, that
have been slain without pity."
Referring to brief remarks at
the opening of the meeting by
Chester A. Kozdroj, chairman of
the Polish Central Citizens Com-
mittee of Detroit, Dr. Wise en-
dorsed the battle cry, "Polonia
Restituta," "Poland will again be
restored." He welcomed the unity
of the smaller peoples for the
ultimate goal of preventing the
repetition of the danger of Hitler-
ism-to the world.
Refers to Russians
Referring to the heroism of the
Russians who have done the most
to hold back the Nazi Hordes,
Dr. Wise declared that "all the
Goebbelses will not divide Am-
erica from Russia."
Speaking of the Jewish suffer-
ings of the Nazis, Rabbi Wise
said:
"We suffer as it has been given
to no other people to suffer.
Hitler, who breaks every pledge
and lives up to every threat, has
vowed to exterminate the Jews.
He will not do this because there
is a Providence that watches over
my people."
Points to Record
Pointing to the record which
shows that between two and
three million Jews have been
murdered within and without
Poland in three years, by the
Nazis, Dr. Wise made a stirring
appeal to the United States and
to the United Nations to save the
civilian population that can still
be saved and to provide havens
of refuge for the victimized Jews.
"I do not believe my country
is so poor in spirit as to deny
refuge to such handfuls as may
escape and come to our shores,"
he added.
Mr. Taft's address was an ap-
peal not to lead the aggressor
nations to hate. He pointed out
that Germany and Japan will
have to be dealt with as peoples.
"Punish the Guilty" -
"Punish the guilty only by the
standards we know," he delay-
ed. He stated that the evils must
be cured at the source. -"We must
join with them," he added, "to
feed their people and your people.
We need to demonstrate our
principles in action.
"I have a major interest—the
United States. We have a major
objective—to see that what is
happening does not happen again.
By hate alone we won't accomp-
lish it. From- our protest let us
develop action."
Mr. Kozdroj's address quoted
re,ports from the underground
movement in Europe to show that
millions of Poles and Jews have
been slaughtered. He expressed
the hope that those who are
fighting against the Nazi menace
will not resort to lip service alone

RECOVER

"I am not going to be a silent
Jew until Hitler is finished and
until the United Nations have
written a charter of equality for
Jews and have given us a small
territory, and that is Eretz Israel."
Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president
of the American Jewish Congress,
made this emphatic declaration at
a luncheon in his honor last Sun-
day at Hotel Statler.
Must Speak With Courage
Addressing 200 men and wo-
men, many. of them prominent in
the most important Jewish move-
ments here, Dr. Wise said that
"we must speak with courage."
Stating that it may not be possi-
ble to save the suffering Jews at
this time, he emphasized that "we
can save our Jewish souls if we
speak with dignity as Jews and
as Americans."
The luncheon was arranged by
a committee of Detroit Jews und-
er the chairmanship of Abe Srere,
with Abe Kasle as vice-chairman.
Fred M. Butzel was honorary
chairman of the committee.
Srere Presides
Mr. Srere presided at the lunch-
eon. Rabbi Joshua S. Sperka,
chairman of the Detroit chapter
of the American Jewish Con-
gress, greeted Dr. Wise in behalf
of the local organization. Aaron
Silberblatt led in the singing of
the National Anthem.
Coming here to address the
protest rally against the Nazi
barbarities in Cass High School,
Dr. Wise also appeared on the
Brotherhood broadcast on Sta-
tion WJR, together with Charles

and Mr. Cushing.

but will rededicate themselves to
strive so that the innocent vic-
tims shall not have suffered in
vain.
Every Cruel Thing
Judge O'Brien, in his introduc-
tory remarks, declared: "Every
cruel thing that the imagination
can conjure has happened in
Europe. We pause to register our
protest so that some aid and suc-
cor can be effected by the United
Nations."
The invocation was given by
Dr. Marshall Reid, former presi-
dent of the Detroit Council of
Churches. Rev. Vermilion Ocoko-
lich of the Serbian St. Lazar
Church gave the benediction.
