Detroit Jews will have an opportunity to hear the latest information on the position of the Jews in Europe, the help that is being extended to refugees and the effectiveness of the work of the Joint Distribution Committee, when Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, chairman of the European Council of the J.D.C., addresses the annual meeting of the Jewish Welfare Federa- tion, next Monday evening, at., the Jewish Community Center, Woodward and Holbrook. Abraham Srere, president of the Federation, who will preside at the meeting, pointed out this week that those who attend this meeting will be able to secure information that was hitherto unavailable. First-Hand Information Mr. Srere said: "The appearance at the Fed- eration meeting on Monday of Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz offers us the opportunity we have been looking for to secure information regarding the status of European Jewry from one who is best qual- ified to speak on the subject. "Our people are interested in many questions, including the following: "What is the status of Jews in the concentration camps in France? "Is there much hope to save the children of Europe by set- tling them in Palestine or the Western Hemisphere? "How much truth can we place in reports like the one, which came two weeks ago from Rumania that Jews can be transported in large num- bers from Nazi-dominated countries? "What is the attitude of Spain towards the refugees and to what extent can the Ameri- can Jewish Joint Distribution Committee provide help for those who are stranded there? "How extensive is the as- sistance given the J.D.C. by the United Nations? "Is it possible for the J.D.C., through whose efforts 7,700 Jewish refugees have emi- grated to Palestine and the Western Hemisphere during the past year, to continue the task of evacuating victims of Nazism? "What is the status of the refugees as well as the native population in North Africa? "How does the J.D.C. func- tion in Portugal and Switzer- land and in other neutral coun- tries? Other Questions "These and many other ques- tions which arise in our minds call for informative answers, and Dr. Schwartz is prepared to pro- vide the necessary information. "I therefore urge all contribu- tors to the Allied Jewish Cam- paign, all the Jewish contribu- tors to the War Chest and Com- munity Fund, to attend Monday's meeting and to utilize the oppor- tunity of securing first-hand in- formation on the historic work of the J.D.C. in extending aid to the millions of suffering Jews."
