Galician Pogrom Victims
In Frantic Calls for Help

Named Vice-President
of Congress Region

SOMEWHERE IN EUROPE, (JTA)—Unpreceden-
ted panic among the remaining Jews in Nazi-occupied
Poland is reported in brief code messages which continue
to reach here from various sections of the Government
General, especially from Galicia, where large-scale pog-
roms are being carried out in the ghettos by special
Gestapo units.
The messages indicate that if steps are not taken
immediately to force the Nazis to discontinue their re-
newed mass-executions of Jews, there will not be a
single Jew left alive in all of Poland very shortly. Pieced
together, the brief S. 0. S. messages, coming from dif-
ferent sources through underground channels, make it
clear that while the Nazis have deported all the Jews
from the Warsaw ghetto, they are not resorting to de-
portations in other towns, but are murdering the Jews
on the spot.
At present the major Jewish ghettos in Galicia are
located in Cracow, Lwow, Tarnopol, Drohobycz, Stanis-
lawow, Rawa-Russka, Zlotchov, Stry, Sambor, Borislav,
Brzezany, Czortkow, Przemysl, Rzeczow, Tarnow and

STOCKHOLM, (JTA)—A coded message reaching Jewish COngress Region.

here this week from Poland states that pogroms have
taken place during the last two weeks in numerous towns
in Eastern Galicia and that in the city of Lwow the Nazi
massacre of Jews lasted for several days.
The message, which came through underground
channels, reads : "Doctor Harigah visited Lwow Jewish
community during the second half of January and re-
mained there for several days, after which he proceeded
to the neighboring Jewish communities."
The word "Harigah" means massacre in Hebrew.
The report also reveals that Dr. Landsberg, the presi-
dent of the Jewish community in the ghetto of Lwow, re-
cently was hanged by the German occupation authorities
together with 10 other Jewish hostages.
Reliable information from other sources substantiates
the reports that the Nazis have embarked on a policy of
intensified annihilation of Jews in Galicia. Many have
succeeded in fleeing to the Ukraine, where they have
joined Russian guerrilla units.
Another message received from Poland says that
many of the Jews deported from France, Belgium and
Holland "have been received by Malach Hamoveth in
Rawa-Russka," thus revealing that the deported Jewish
victims met their death in the city of Rawa-Russka, in
Eastern Galicia.

Pope Tells Chief Rabbi He's Doing
`Utmost for the Persecuted Jews

JERUSALEM, (Palcor)—Pope Pius, in a per-
sonal reply to a communication from Chief Rabbi
Herzog strongly urging Papal intervention for the
salvation of the Jews of Europe, declared that he is
doing his "utmost for the persecuted Jews."
The Chief Rabbi had acted immediately after
reports of the atrocities in Europe had reached Pales-
tine, communicating with the Pope through the Apo-
stolic Delegate here. His message had included prac-
tical proposals regarding certain groups of refugees,
and it is believed that the Pope's answer relates also
to these concrete suggestions.
