As part of a systematic program to
encourage support of the Jewish paro-
chial schools in New York City, a golden
harvest of War Bonds, including a $10,-
000 bond for the top winner, was dis-
tributed by the United Yeshivas Founda-
tion at the close of its ninth semi-annual
membership campaign.
As the 1943 New York State legisla-
tive season began in Albany, the hopper
was jammed with a series of bills to
strengthen the campaign against dis-
crimination in industry, one of the meas-
ures permitting recovery of damages of
from $100 to $500 from banks, insur-
ance companies and utilities practising
the "misdemeanor" of discrimination.
All Negroes in German territory have
been ordered to register at the same
office which handles Jewish deporta-
tion and property confiscation, it was
announced in Washington by the Office
of War Information, on the basis of a
report in a Swedish newspaper. "Ap-
parently there are no longer many Jews
or gypsies left in Germany and the Ger-
mans are now forced to find new objects
of their racial policy," the Swedish
organ stated.
Dies In Air Crash
A Jewish girl, Section Officer Rose
Jette Goodman, of New Glasgow, N. S.,
was the first member of the Women's
Division of the R.C.A.F. to die in a
plane accident, when the crane train-
ing plane in which she was flying crash-
ed near Claresholm, Alberta, and Miss
Ruby Fannie Yaffee of Hamilton, an-
other member of the R.C.A.F., was the
first casualty in the Women's Division
when she was seriously injured in an
automobile accident, according to a re-
port issued by the War Efforts Commit-
tee of the Canadian Jewish Congress
in Montreal.
Urges Rescue of Jews
A resolution authorizing the Canad-
ian Jewish Congress to file with the
government of Canada the available in-
formation regarding the fate of the
Jews of Europe and to request the co-
operation of the government in the im-
plementing of plans for the rescue of
the Jewish victims of the war was ad-
opted by the annual conference of the
Eastern Division of the Canadian Jew-
ish Congress in Montreal. The confer-
ence commended the efforts of the Unit-
ed Jewish Refugees and War Relief
Agencies in prividing transportation for
1,000 refugee children in Teheran to
proceed to Palestine.
Maj. Samuel Zemurray, Jr., 31-year-
old son of the Jewish philanthropist and
president of the United Fruit Company,
was killed last month when his plane
crashed on returning from a scouting
expedition in Africa, according to an an-
nouncement by the War Department.
Major Zemurray, who had been promi-
nent in Tulane University athletics,
having been a member of the football
and captain of the boxing team, was
buried at Oran, Algeria.

PALESTINE

During the month of January, 1,067
Jewish volunteers enlisted in the Army,
R.A.F., Navy and Jewish Settlement
Police, as compared with 760 in Dec-
ember, it was disclosed here by Dr. Ber-
nard Joseph, acting political chief of the
Jewish Agency for Palestine in the ab-
sence of Moshe Shertok and Chairman
of the Jewish Agency Recruiting Com-
mittee.
Twenty-two Palestinian Jewish mem-
bers of the R.A.F. Ground Services will
leave the Middle East shortly for Great
Britain and Rhodesia for training as
pliots. Eighteen of these men had •been
serving in the R.A.F. since the outbreak
of the war. Two enlisted recently and
the other two had been attending school
in England.
The drafting of legislation, to be
made public this month, raising the lo-
cal income tax, was foreshadowed
by George Ritchie Sanford, Financial
Secretary of the Palestine Government
in an interview appearing in the Pales-
tine Post. The Post predicts a surtax
amounting to 75 per cent on income over
£2,500 yearly and a company tax of 30
per cent, which is double the present
total. The increased levies are expected
to yield E1,000,000 annually instead of
£750,000,

Four thousand Jewish children and
500 adults from Bulgaria are to be ad-
mitted into Palestine as soon as trans-
portation facilities can be made avail-
able, it was announced in the House of
Commons by Colonial Secretary Oliver
Stanley.
British Foreign Secretary Anthony
Eden denied in the House of Commons
the story that the British Government
had refused visas to admit into Great
Britain 2,000 children from France who
were consequently deported to Ger-
many.
Reports from authorative sources
state that there are now only about
15,000 to 17,000 Jews left in Germany.
Most of them are engaged in cleaning
the streets and in other manual labor.
The only Kehillah institution that may
still function in Vienna is the Jewish
Burial Society, which is limited to fun-
erals only, according to a notice signed
by Baldur von Schirach, Governor of
Vienna, and published in the Berlin of-
ficial Reichs Anzeiger, which announces
that the Vienna Kehillah has ceased to
exist.
Wilhelm Rothschild, a member of the
Rothschilds of Germany, was arrested in
France while trying to cross the frontier
into Spain, according to reports from
Vichy. Mr. Rothschild had left Germany
in 1933, immediately after Hitler's
ascent to power, and had lived in South-
ern France until its occupation by the
Nazis.
NORTH AFRICA
French police are reported to have
raided the Jewish community centers
in Algiers and in other cities of French
North Africa and to have confiscated
the lists of "Aryanized" Jewish proper-
ty prepared by the Jewish communities
pursuant to General Eisenhower's pro-
mise to abolish the anti-Jewish laws and
to restore confiscated Jewish property.
It is alleged that underlying this raid
is the fact that many high French offi-
cials in North Africa are now partners
in these enterprises and for that reason
they stubbornly oppose the abolition of
the anti-Jewish laws and sabotage all
efforts to restore the property to its
rightful owners.

RUSSIA

Benjamin Starobin, Jewish leader of
a guerrilla band consisting of both Jews
and–non-Jews, is reported by the Soviet
press to have captured a complete Ger-
man unit along with its commander—
who had been so annoyed by the guer-
rilla band that he had offered a price
for Starobin's head.

In an earnest desire to aid in
the drive for Victory, Moss Hart
made application to a branch of
the service where he thought his
talents would be useful. Follow-
ing the customary routine, he
was called for an interview—
and was rejected. Reason: "He
didn't have the necessary schol-
astic requirements!" Before Hart
left, the examiner asked cur-
iously why he had repeatedly
looked at his watch during the
interview. "I'm in a bit of a
hurry," said the Pulitzer prize
winner. "I'm due to lecture at
Columbia University in twenty
minutes!"
