Bnai Brith Backs
Call for Assembly

Lincoln—We Stand
In Need of Him

By DR. B. BENEDICT GLAZER
Rabbi, Temple Beth El

NEW YORK, (JTA) —
The three-day conference
of the executive committee
of the Bnai Brith, marking
the 100th annual meeting
of that body, concluded
this week by voting its ap-
proval of and adherence to
the proposals adopted last
month at the Pittsburgh
conference of representa-
tives of Jewish organiza-
tions who recorded them-
selves as favoring the call-
ing of an American Jewish
Assembly. The proposed
Assembly is to provide a
representative forum for
the unified expression of the
opinion of American Jews
with regard to action on the
status of Jews in the post-
war world and the imple-
mentation of the rights of
the Jewish people with res-
pect to Palestine.

On February 12,
the American
people again pay
reverent homage
to the memory of
Abraham Lincoln.
No statesman in
American history
has been enshrin-
ed more securely
in the mind and Dr. Glazer
heart of this great
nation than Lincoln.

It is rather for us
to be here dedicated
to the great task
remaining before us,
that from these honored
dead we take increased
devotion to that cause
for which they here
gave the last full
measure of devotion"

He has been made the subject
of innumerable studies and bio-
graphies. His private life as well
as his record of public service
has been subjected to an almost
incredible amount of scrutiny
and analysis. The folklore and
legends which now surround the
authentic facts of his personal
history have elevated him to the
status of a semi-mythical per-
sonality. And yet, he has sur-
vived the effects of both criti-
cism and idolatry.

His immortality has become
an assured reality of American
history. On the anniversary of
his birth, we can no longer add
to, or even subtract from, the
majesty of his character. He no
nonger requires our adulation,
but in this hour of national crisis,
we stand in need of him.

We need something of his
strength and vision to preserve
the great American heritage
