Boy Scouts Get
Role in Temple
Israel Services

'Abraham Lincoln and His
Biblet.. Topic of Rabbi
Fram's Sermon Friday

Boy Scout Sabbath and Abra-
ham Lincoln Sabbath will be
observed by Temple Israel at
services Friday night. Feb. 12,
in the Lecture Hall of the Detroit
Institute of Arts.
"Abraham Lincoln and His
Bible" will be the subject of
Rabbi Leon Fram's sermon. Can-
tor Robert S. Tulman will render
a solo, "This Is My Country". He
will be accompanied by Karl W.
Haas on the organ.
Boy Scout Troop No. 146, the
Temple Israel troop, will recite
the Scout Oath and Law and
will lead the congregation in the
salute to the Flag and in the
singing of patriotic hymns. In
honor of the Boy Scouts, the
Girl Scouts will attend in uni-
form.
All pupils of the congregation

Religious School will come with
their parents to honor the
Scouts and to lead the Congrega ,
tion in the singing of the hymn
"Early Will I Seek Thee" by
Solomon ibn Gabirol.
Maurice H. Levin and Joseph
Lattin are Scoutmasters of the
Troop. Saul Rose is chairman of
the Troop committee. The Troop
meets Monday nights in the
Hampton Public School.
This Friday night, Rabbi Fram
delivers the second in his series
of sermons on "Judaism and a
Just a n d Enduring Peace."

`Memorial Sabbath'
Planned for Martyrs

Saturday, Feb. 13, has been
designated as "Memorial Sab-
bath" • by the - Women's League
for Sabbath Observance to honor
the memory of the 92 girls in the
Beth Jacob School of Warsaw
who chose death in preference
to a fate of shame the Nazi au-
thorities had decreed for them.
They asked only that the Jews
of the world say Kaddash for
them.
Local Rabbis will devote their
sermons on Feb. 13 to honor the
memory of these martyrs, and
the women are urged to attend
the synagogues on that Sabbath.

Jewish Theological Students
Condemn Statement Issued
by Minority Group

NEW YORK—Jewish - theolog-
ical students, in actions taken
by the student bodies of the
country's five leading religious
institutions, have gone on record
as opposing the recent manifes-
tations of anti-Zionism in Jewish
ranks and as condemning the
attempt of a minority group of
rabbis to find a basis for their
anti-Zionist claims in Jewish tra-
dition.

Approval was given by stu-
dents of the Jewish Theological
Seminary of America, the Rabbi
Isaac Elchanan Theological Sem-
inary, The Jewish Institute of
Religion, all of New York, and
the Hebrew Theological College
of Chicago to a statement urging
a three-point program including
recognition of the Jewish peole
as a member of the United Na-
tions, the formation of a Jewish
army and the re-establishment of
Palestine as a Jewish state.

Yeshivath Chachmey
Lublin Adds English
Classes to Program

With the beginning of the new
school term, Yeshivath Chach-
mey Lublin has opened high
school classes, from Monday
through Thursday from 5 to 8
p. m. High school subjects are
taught by Jay Bodzin and Norval
Slobin, teachers in the Detroit
high schools. Thus, English classes
will harmonize with the Yes-
hivah cirriculum.
Credit for the opening of these
classes is given Rabbi Joshua
S. Sperka of Congregation 'Bnai
David.
The architectural plans for the
remodeling of the building have
been completed and actual work
will begin soon. The third floor
will be made suitable for sleep-
ing quarteri for 75 students.
Offices and meeting rooms will
be on the second floor, The main
floor will be converted into a
synagogue, recreation hall, etc.
The basement .will be used for
the kitchen, dining and storage
rooms.
It is announced that large funds
are needed immediately to take
care of the remodeling program.
In the last few weeks, the fol-
lowing were added to the board
of directors: Isaac August, one of
the founders and former presi-
dents of Mogen Abraham Con-
gregation; J. Shevitz, vice-presi-
dent of Congregation Beth Talc)
Emanuel; David Goldbergell. D.
Smerling, Max Kaplan.
The Ladies' Auxiliary of the
Yeshivah, under the leadership
of its president, Mrs. D. Silver-
stein, will have a Purim under-
taking at Jericho Temple, 2705
Joy Road, on March 22.

Students Assail
Anti-Zionist
Rabbis' Stand

stein, of New York, will be the
guest speaker.
At this Sunday's gathering
Rabbi David Lifshitz, known as
the Suvalker Ray, will be the
principal speaker. Rabbi Lif-
shitz, an outstanding rabbinical
authority, is a scion of the fa-
mous Yeshivahs of G r o d n o
and Mir. He was rabbi of Suval-
ke, Poland, until the city was
over-run by the Nazis. He and
his family escaped to Kovno and
later to Lithuania.
The Suvalker Rav lived
through the tragedy of an escape
through the Russian winter from
Kovno to Moscow where he re-
ceived the American visa. Via
Vladivostock, Koba and Shang-
hai he finally reached the United
States.
Shortly upon his arrival Rabbi
Lifshitz was appointed professor
at the Theological College of Chi-
cago. He is a member of the
Rabbinical Council of Three,
which bestows the rabbinical au-
thorization upon the graduates
of this institution.

JUNIOR CONGREGATION -
OF, SHAAREY ZEDEK
The Sabbath service of Junior
Congregation of Shaarey Zedek
will be held Feb. 6 at 9:30 a. in.,
in the Prayer Room of the Kate
Frank Memorial Building. Phyllis
Zieve will give an explanation
of the prayer, and Edith Lober-
man will discuss the Biblical
portion. Sheldon Lutz and My-
ron Rosenthal will act as cant-
ors, and Robert Kasle as Ba'al
Koreh.

David Danzig, formerly pro-
gram director for the Jewish
Welfare Board, member agency
of USO, has been appointed exec-
utive for USO program services,
replacing Robert M. Heininger
who has been commissioned a
Lieutenant in the Navy, it was
announced at USO national head-
quarters, 350 Fifth Ave., New
York.

Temple Beth El to Dedicate Honor Roll
Of Men in Service on Friday, Feb. 12

On Friday evening, Feb. 12, at 8:15 o'clock, at the Sabbath
Eve services, Temple Beth El will dedicate its Honor Roll of
Service Men. A guest speaker will be present on this occasion.
Dr. B. Benedict Glazer, spiritual leader of
Temple Beth El, will dedicate the Honor Roll
comprising the names of more than 200 men.
This is the first dedication of its kind in
a Detroit synagogue, and a large congrega-
tion is anticipated at the service.
Special music rendered by an augmented
choir, is being arranged by Julius Chajes, di-
rector, with Jason Tickton at the organ.
A special committee on arrangements,
with David M. Welling as chairman, is plan-
ning the program for the evening, and a spe-
cial Dedication Issue of the Temple Bulletin
Dr. Glazer
is being published to commemorate this event.
This Friday evening, Dr. Glazer will speak on "Racial
Myths and Religious Intolerance—Their Progress in Europe
and America." A social hour will follow the services.
