Mussolini. Seeks to Pacify
Pope on Jewish Question

labor Palestine, this week an-

LONDON (JTA)—London newspapers reported this nounced the commencement of
week that Mussolini, in an effort to strengthen his position a 16-week radio program in the
with the Vatican, is relaxing the anti-Jewish laws in interests of the drive, through
Italy. No details were given.
Describing the entry of the British forces into Tripoli,
the London Times emphasizes the undisguised pleasure
and the eloquent feelings of relief which the Jewish
population in Tripoli displayed. Other London news-
papers in their reports from Tripoli state that a number
of leading Jews there were executed by the retreating
'Axis armies a few hours before the British forces entered.
The British military authorities have torn down the
barbed wire fence which the Italians erected around the
Jewish-populated section of the city, thus releasing the
. Jews from the ghetto which has been in existence since
the Nazi campaign. in Libya, the press also reports.

Emotions of Jews Described by Reporters

(Don Whitehead and George Tucker, Associated Press corres-
pondents, who were the first Americans to enter Tripoli with the
British forces, reported that they were hugged and kissed by the
liberated Jews. In a joint dispatch from Tripoli they described the
emotions of the Jewish community in Tripoli as follows:
"Touring the city, we visited Tripoli's ancient ghetto where
16,000 Jews were crowded into a labyrinth of houses and cellars
resemblying a rabbit warren. We walked through an arched gate
guarded by military policemen and the instant the people recog-
nized us as Americans the outburst was all but riotous. Some
threw themselves at our feet, offering gifts of wine, tobacco and
money. Men threw their arms about us and kissed our cheeks.
Women kissed our hands. Children clung to our legs.

Jewish Merchants Executed in Streets

The suggestion that Tripolitania, other sections of
Libya and other Axis territories in Africa, now occupied
by the British forces should be made available as soon as
possible "as another home for displaced and oppressed
Jews from Europe" was made by Sir John Wardlow-
Milne, Conservative members of Parliament. In a letter
published in the London Times, Sir John urges that the
settlement of Jews in these territories should be conducted
under the control of the United Nations, since Britain
desires no territorial gains.

Cardinal Hits Nazi Racial Theory

I
ZURICH (JTA)—Justinian Cardinal Seredi of Hun-
gary, in a strongly-worded speech delivered in Budapest
and broadcast this week over the Vatican radio, bitterly
condemned the Nazi racial theories, and demanded that
Hungary give protection "to all who are menaced on
account of their beliefs or their race."
Without mentioning the Jews, the Cardinal called
'upon the people in Hungary to abstain from participating
in mass-executions. He also warned that "the Church
will deny sacraments to those who have helped to carry
off others and send them to forced labor for ideological
reasons" as is the case with the Jews in Hungary. "Hun-
gary must remain a state based on her own justice and
must not bow to alien injustice," he stated.
Vatican Broadcasts Pastoral to Germans -
WASHINGTON (JTA) — The Vatican radio this
;week broadcast to the German people the pastoral letter
of the Bishop of Berlin, Konrad, Count von Preysing, in
which he attacked Nazi racial theory, United States
Government monitors reported.
The pastoral was written by the Bishop of Berlin
On December 12. The manuscript was smuggled out of
Germany and reached the United States through neutral
channels last week. A translation was brought to the
attention of the United States Senate at that time by
Senaor James M. Mead of New York. The Vatican broad-
cast quoted the text of the pastoral without comment.

Jewish Birth Rate In Palestine Drops

JERUSALEM, (JTA)—The Jewish birth rate in
Palestine has dropped since 1924 to such an extent that a
danger exists that the population gain resulting from
recent Jewish immigration will be wiped out within two
generations, it was stated here this week by Prof. Abra-
ham H. Fraenkel. of the Hebrew University. He said :that
the drop in the Jewish birth rate is "catastrophic." The
natural increase among Jews has decreased from 38.2 in
1924 to 20.7 in 1941, he stated.

"A husky young fellow suddenly took us by the arms and
shoved us through the crowds into a courtyard and down a flight
of dark steps into a room where a white-robed patriarch sat at a
bare table. They told us that a few hours before the troops entered
leading Jewish merchants Jewish merchants had been dragged
from their shops and shot, but they expressed no surprise at this
because, they said, it was the kind of thing that had been going on
since the days when this city was the seat of Mediterranean piracy."
