General Henri Giraud, High Commis-
sioner of French North Africa, has
pledged in an official statement that
racial intolerance, which has inspired
many of the laws now in effect in North
Africa, would soon be abolished in ter-
ritory which he controls . . . A report
from Tangier states that the French
authorities in North Africa are prepar-
ing to release all interned Jews who are
citizens of Allied countries, but not
Jewish refugees from Germany and
Austria.
On the eve of the British occupation
of Tripoli, Axis soldiers together with
Arab fascists, convinced that evacua-
tion was imminent, attacked the Jewish
quarter of the city, looting homes and
businesses, demolishing synagogues and
killing 162 Jews, among them the lead-
ers of the Kehillah, according to a re-
port received here. The number of Jews
killed by the Nazis since their occupa-
tion of Tripoli is set at 700. Relief for
the surviving victims is said to be ur-
gently needed . . . The Italian mayor of
Tripoli, as a token of disapproval of
Italian participation in the massacres,
is reported to have allocated 10,000 lira
for the widows and orphans of the vic-
tims and 5,000 lira to open a free soup
kitchen to feed the impoverished Jews
whose belongings and food were loot-
ed by the Nazis.
Zionist circles and Jewish community
leaders in London expressed the great-
est satisfaction on the receipt of news
that Mr. Louis Lipsky, American Zionist
leader, will soon visit England to help
launch the 1943 Keren Hayesod drive
there. Although Mr. Lipsky has visited
England on a number of occasions, he
has never toured the country. His repu-
tation as an eloquent speaker and the
position which he holds in American
Zionist life make him especially wel-
come at this time, it was stated by mem-
bers of the Federation of British Zion-
ists, headed by Barnett Janner.
Forty - seven prominent Bucharest
Jews, including eight rabbis, Chassidic
scholars, doctors, lawyers, writers and
merchants, have been interned in a
concentration camp. They were accused.
of anti-state activity by the Rumanian
government.
Mussolini will start a milder Jewish
regime in Italy, it is asserted by the
London Daily Sketch, which explains
that this action is a result not only of
the Italian defeat in Libya but also of
the popular demand for a break with
Germany as well as Mussolini's desire
to please the Pope.

Panel on Wednesday
Incensed by Nazi anti-Semitic agita-
tion, a number of Swedish Deputies,
headed by Socialist Deputy Brandt, have
introduced a motion in the Swedish
Parliament demanding the prohibition
of all anti-Jewish propaganda and the
suppression of all anti-Jewish organiza-
tions and newspapers, according to a
report from Stockholm.
The Bulgarian government has pro-
hibited travel by Jews in trains and
buses. This order deprives 10,000 Jews
of their livelihood, inasmuch as it pre-
vents their trading between cities and
villages.
The Pariser Zeitung denounces the
wife of Governor-General Nogues of
Morocco as a "Jewess who is re
sponsi-
ble for the help given by the French to
the Americans upon their landing in
Morocco." The Nazi organ declares that
she is now exerting great influence on
French officers in order to help the
Allies. . . .This version is sharply at
odds with the impression of trained Brit-
ish and American reporters who regard
General Nogues as the backbone of pro-
Axis sentiment in North Africa and as
the man who ordered French resistance
to the American occupation, increasing
the casualties on both sides.
A tiny democratic island in the sea of
European Nazism, the people of Switz-
erland, protectors of thousands of Jew-.
ish and other refugees, resent the "in-
sults" of their powerful German neigh-
bors, even going to the extent of ban-
ning a book published in the Reich in
criticism of Switzerland. . . • This was
revealed in the decision of the Federal
Council to bar the import of the latest
volume of "Meyer's Konversations Lex-
icon, of criminals, particularly Jews."
Under the auspices of the Palestine
Parliamentary Committee, Moshe Sher-
tok, political chief of the Jewish Agency,
addressed a well attended meeting of
Members of both Houses of Parliament
in London.
Great Britain's Jewish Fund for
Soviet Russia has launched an appeal
for 24 mobile x-ray units, valued at
£50,000, for Russia. Madame Maisky,
wife of the Russian Ambassador to Great
Britain, was among those present at the
gathering, which was presided over by
Dr. Redcliffe Salaman.
Russian troops which have re-occupi-
ed Voroshilovsk, Kislovodsk, Mineral-
nye and Vody have found that the Nazis
massacred the local Jewish populations,
according to reports of the Soviet press.
The Norwegian clergy and people
have united in denouncing the Quisling
Bishop F.alkhanson of Bergen who, at
the instigation of the Nazis, protested
against the pro-Jewish prayers conduct-
ed in the Norwegian churches.

Nazis Screen Defeats in
Russia With Anti-Semitism
New Discriminatory Measures in the Balkans; Jews Barred
From Receiving Mail; Algerian Kehillah Threatened
With Arrestt If Jews Complain
ZURICH, (JTA) — New anti-Jewish measures in
Bulgaria and Rumania were reported this week over
German radios now concentrating on anti-Jewish broad-
casts to divert the attention of the people in Germany
from the Nazi defeats in Russia.
German newspapers received here report that the
Nazi authorities in Germany have closed down the last
Jewish insane asylum in the Reich. In Bulgaria, the Nazi
stations reported, Jews will now be forced to assume
Jewish first names when they register with the authorities
and in Rumania all snow shoveling in the streets must
now be done by Jews, the Nazi radio revealed.
Jews Barred from Receiving Mail
KUIBYSHEV, (JTA)—Jews serving in Hungarian
forced labor battalions on the Russian front---it is esti-
mated that there are about 250,000 of them — are forbid-
den to receive mail from home, it is disclosed in confi-
dential orders to Hungarian officers seized when the Red
Army crushed an Hungarian infantry division on the
Southern front.
Arrest of Council Threatened If Jews Complain
TANGIER, (JTA)—French authorities have threat-
ened to arrest the Algerian Kehillah Council, headed by
Elie Gozlan, if the Jews should complain to America
about conditions in French North Africa, it is stated here.
The American authorities, it is reported, refused to re-
veal the true position of North African Jewry addressed
by the Algerian and Moroccan Jews to Jewish organiza-
tions in the United States and Britain.
The appointment of Marcel Peyrouton as governor-
general of Algeria has thoroughly depressed the Jewish
population. A number of French reactionaries who fled to
Spanish Morocco when the Americans landed in Algeria
have returned and resumed their anti-Jewish agitation.
