Quotation of the Week

"Nazi anti-Semitism is at the very core of the present ordeal of
civilization. The hate of Jews comes from a non-human abyss of
madness, is a diabolic, flaming hate. It is enough to read Hitler's
speeches to be convinced of this.

MORE ON SULZBERGER

The once-shy Arthur Hays Sulzberger
has made himself a perfect target for
public comment since he buckled on his
shield to do battle in the 'public arena
. . . It is true that the N.Y. Times pub-
lisher, who recently returned from Eng-
land on a Red Cross mission, is soon to
return there for the purpose of telling
the Colonial Office and the Foreign Of-
fice that American Jews want nothing to
do with a Jewish Palestine? . . . Will he
also suggest that the Foreign Office might
make an excellent coup by arranging
for some British Empire possession to
invite a great number of Jews, in order
to divert attention from Palestine?

Wonder what the revered father of
Arthur Hays thinks of his son these days?
. . . The late Cyrus L. Sulzberger was an
active Zionist and was once vice-president
of the America Federation of Zionists
. . . The Jewish experts would suggest
that it's a case of the Talmudic character-
ization, "Hometz ben Yayin," (Vinegar,
son of wine) . . . In his letter to Dr.
Samuel Margoshes, Day editor, in which
Arthur Hays Sulzberger spoke eloquent-
ly of his father's Jewishness, he con-
veniently failed to recall the fact that the
man who tries so hard to hurt Zionism is
the son of one who worked zealously to
preserve it.

And talking of anti-Zionsists, isn't it
very strange that when the reactionaries
get to work, they don't know the dif-
ference between Zionists and anti-Zion-
ists? Take, for example, that series of
vicious atacks by Westbrook Pegler on
liberal David Dubinsky, who is called
"unassimilated though naturalized." Dub-
insky is one of those who thinks Zionism
invites attacks on American Jews! He
himself glories in his anti-Zionism!
ADVERTISING MUSICIAN
Morton Gould, composer and orchestra
conductor, is hailed as the first musical
director for an advertising agency. The
youthful musician will supervise all mu-
sical activity for the agency's clients.
That's a far cry from being played by the
New York Philharmonic. on the same
program with Shostakovich. One of
Gould's most famous compositions is the
five-movement "Spirituals."

An Observation on the Problem
of American Immigration

By JACOB FISHMAN

Editor, Jewish Morning Journal

(Copyright, 1943, Independent
Jewish Press Service)

It would be wise, in my view, to aban-
don a frequently announced Jewish con-
cept that immigration is a purely Jewish
problem. It is nothing of the kind. It is
an American problem. The majority of
those who oppose immigration liberali-
zation, whether in the ranks of left in-
tellectuals, right wing business men or
middle-of-the-road laborites, approach
the issue from a point of view which
usually has nothing to do with the con-
sideration of Jewish interests. After all,
we cannot forget that if the .opportunity
were afforded to Europeans, to .enter the
United States freely, many, many mil-
lions of Continentals, besides Jews; would
be eager to seize the opportunity.

Lofty Principals
•
As individual citizens we may regret
the narrow-minded economic and social
position which a majority of Congress
now seems to have on the problerri of
immigration: It certainly does not coin-
cide with the lofty principles which we
are announcing to the world as being
the heart of our fighting purpose along-
side the United Nations. It seems to stand
sharply in contrast with our promise of
a postwar world brotherhood in which
all will share the available resources of
the earth. It certainly does not accord
with the liberal viewpoint recently enun-
ciated by the ABoard of Visa Review of
the State Department which declared
that every immigrant admitted to the
United States is a token to the United
Nations of our humanitarian policy.
We shall need the resources of intel-
ligent education to modify the antagon-
ism to the liberalized immigration from
which the United States as well as the
people of Europe may benefit in the post :-
war period. We may regard the present
policy as wrong and painful. We would
be ill-advised to ascribe it to anti-:
Semitism.

"This supernatural hatred covers itself with an infinity of pre-
texts and masks. In its very nature, it hates the Jews because they
are the people of God and have given Christ to the world.

"I envy those priests and Christian laymen who now are starv-
ing and dying in concentration camps because they have hidden and
sheltered Jewish children and Jewish families, hunted like cattle
in the streets, in the houses, in the hospitals, and mercilessly sent
to the Germans and to death. Those Christians have known And
experienced their spiritual, religious and supernatural kindred with
Israel." .

ZIONIST DOINGS

Something very important is brewing
in the American Zionist movement . . .
And you will soon hear about it . . . It is
sufficient to state that Dr. Weismann,
Louis Lipsky, Nahum Goldmann, other
important Zionist leaders held an urgent
conference this week in Washington
which Rabbi Stephen S. Wise did not
attend only because he was ill in bed
. .. At the same time Iraq's opportunistic
entry into the war is giving the Zionists
a new headache . . . It is obvious that
the Arabs, who have been sitting on the
fence, and even leaning towards the
Axis, are now beginning to jump onto
the Allied bandwagon . . . Nobody will
be surprised if Egypt follows Iraq's ex-
ample and joins the United Nations now
that the joining is good . . . The fact that
Egypt and Iraq were "neutral" even
when Rommel's armies were at the gates
of Alexandria will be conveniently for-
gotten . . . Palestine Arabs will thus,
through Iraq, gain more influence with
the United Nations since Iraq will be
one of the "insiders" at the peace con-
ference . . . Adding to the Zionist com-
plications is a report received by the
State Department from Mr. Wadsworth,
the American Minister to Syria.

ANTI-ZIONIST

Wadsworth has the reputation of being
pro-Arab and anti-Zionist from the time
when he was American Consul in Jeru-
salem . . . Now he informs the State
Department that he has a hard job in
checking anti-American feelings among
Arab leaders in Syria . .. These leaders,
he reports, came to him to express their
resentment over the petition signed re-
cently by many American senators and
congressmen in favor of establishing Pal-
estine as a Jewish Homeland after the
war . . . Wadsworth explained to them
that a petition signed by Senators and
Congressmen does not mean much in the
United States as long as the issue with
which the petition deals is not raised
in Congress, and this made them feel a
little better . . . Add to all this the "in-
nocent" statement which Emir Abdullah
gave this week to the American press
representatives in Transjordan, that he
wants . to see Transjordan, Palestine,
Syria and Lebanon united under a mon-
arch-presumably himself—and you will
understand why it, .,is not easy to be a
Zionist 'leader now-a-days:

PROBLEMS

Some time during the month of Feb-
ruary Wendell Willkie is expected to
make a most significant announcement
on the Jewish situation in Europe.
Remember how the last war was fol-
lowed by severe immigration restrictions
in this country? . . . Well, Washington
expects that by the time the next peace
treaty is signed there will be new laws
prohibiting any immigration whatsoever
as long as the American unemployment
figure does not fall below the million
mark.
William Ziff, author of "The Coming
Battle of Germany" (which, by the way,
has just been republished in a Pocket
Book edition), is slaving away in Wash-
ington at a new book that will deal
with peace problems.

MILITARY NOTES

Congratulations to Judge Jacob Schwo-
lsky, president of the Hartford, Conn.,
Zionist. District, on the promotion of his
son, Robert, from the rank of First Lieu-
tenant to that of Captain of Infantry .. .
Robert is serving overseas, in the same
regiment as his uncle, Lieutenant-Colonel
Harry Schwolsky.
When Barney Ross was holding that
advanced position at Guadalcanal he was
pretty busy with the Japs—but not too
busy to remember his pals back home
. . . At least, comedian Lou Costello
boasts that he is the proud recipient of
a pack of Japanese cigarettes that Barney
sent nim.

SPANKNOEBEL IN THE NEWS

A familiar name is back in the news
columns. At the New York trial of the
U. S. Government's suit to void the citi-
zenship of Fritz Kuhn and 19 other
former German Bund members on the
ground that their oaths of allegiance to
this country were made fraudulently and
insincerely, Heinz Spanknoebel was men-
tioned as the Nazi agent who attempted
to take over the New Yorker Staats-
Zeitung and Herold.
The charge was made by Victor Rid-
der, publisher of the paper, who told of
a visit to his office by Spanknoebel with
letters from Dr. Robert Ley, head of
the German Labor Front, and Ernest
W. Bohle, head of the Nazi party's for-
eign division, giving this emissary "au-
thority" to assume control of the German
press in the United States.
This recalls to mind your commenta-
tor's conversation with Heinz Spank-
noebel in the East Side Detroit camera
shop where Heinz was employed. It was
in March 1933 that Spanknoebel first
gained public notoriety as spokesman for
Hitler.
For nearly two hours he tried to ex-
plain to this commentator his position
and Hitler's. He was inarticulate, his
English was bad, he was apologetic and
he did not even emphasize his anti-
Semitic attitude.
Publisher Ridder quoted him as say-
ing that "you will no longer be allowed
to publish your pro-Jewish articles in
your paper." But to your Jewish cor-
respondent he was humble. Perhaps he
had not yet had orders from Hitler to
assume full control of the press in this
country.
A MEDIOCRE NAZI
The fact is that Heinz Spanknoebel
impressed us as very mediocre, indeed
quite incapable of any action except
being a bully when he carried with him
letters of "authority" from Nazi chief-
tains.
Ask those who know Fritz Kuhn and
his cohorts, and they will tell you the
same story. Their strength lies in a
fanaticism and a hatred that gives them
assigned powers.. As you know, you can
not reason with them and justice is
foreign to their vocabulary.
HEINZ'S NAME ANATHEMA
While your Commentator is reminisc-
ing on his visit with Spanknoebel, it is
well to recall the reaction to his name
after our. "expose" of this Nazi agent
was published.
Several days after the story appeared
we heard an argument between two
youngsters of nine in our back yard.
They were two Jewish lads who came to
blows, and when one wanted to get the
better of the other, he shouted, "You
Spanknoebel."
Nov, all the Nazi names are anathema.
And the pleasing fact about the attitude
towards the Nazis in this country is that
German leaders like the Ridder Brothers
have led, and are now leading, in the
fight against the evil of Hitlerism.

The other day we picked up the Con-
cise Oxford Dictionary and found the
following definition for the verb "jew":
cheat, overreach . . . And don't think
that the standard- American dictionaries
do any better . . . Now you understand
why the textbook Commission set up by
Kenneth Leslie is needed in this country
• • • We should also like to point out
that the jokesters of the radio program
"Can You Top It", are overdoing the
Jewish dialect jokes . . . It's getting so
that their stories are positively in bad
taste.
The Anti-Semitic rowdyism we've been
reporting to you as marring the peace
of the Bronx and Brooklyn has now
reached the night club Sector . . • But
