United Nations Map Plans
To Aid Jews Fleeing Nazis
Parliament Hears Eden and Attlee Reveal British Move to
Implement Allies' Recent Declaration Against
Atrocities; Two Proposals Studied
LONDON, (JPS-Palcor)—A two-fold program is
being 'considered by Great Britain to implement the recent
United Nations' declaration against the Nazi atrocities,
one to assist Jews in areas controlled by the British Em-
pire and the other, in' countries to be affected by an
international agreement, Foreign Secretary Anthony
Eden told the House of Commons this week.
When dealing with queries on North Africa, the
Foreign Secretary admitted that the situation there for
Jews was not satisfactory but added the hope that con-
ditions soon would be improved. It was assumed his state-
ment was based on reports of Harold Macmillan, who
recently was sent to North Africa as British Minister to
General Giraud.
Seek International Agreement
Daniel Lipson inquired whether the stage has been
reached when concrete proposals have been made to
Germany. He was told by the Foreign Secretary that
the latter did not know of any but there was a hope for
concrete results.
To John Dugdale's query as to whether all refu-
gees, "Jews and non-Jews," will be included -under the
contemplated arrangements, Mr. Eden replied : "That
is the absolute condition of our policy and must always
be."
Samuel Silverman asked whether the Foreign Secret-
ary would bear in mind that expressions of moral indig-
nation, lose a great deal of their force, unless accompan-
ied by an initiation of steps for practical help. "That is
exactly what we are doing, within our limitations, trying
to get an international agreement," Mr. Eden replied.

The appointment, with the consent
of American military authorities of
Marcel Peyrouten as Governor-General
of Algeria has bewildered liberals in
Washington who recall the pro-Axis and
the anti-Semitic history of the French
official who was, until recently, French
Ambassador to Argentina and before
that Minister of Interior in the Vichy
government . . . Long an apologist for
Fascism, Peyrouten sponsored the anti-
Jewish 1 aws that were imposed on
France in 1940 when he was _Secretary
General of the Police Administration.
Albert D. Lasker, who recently re-
tired from the advertising business, has
announced a contribution of $50,000
to advance the cause of birth control
in the United States. His gift was the
largest ever made to the Planned Par-
enthood Federation, of which the new
Mrs. Lasker is secretary.
Albert Basserman, brilliant German
Jewish - actor who became a featured
Hollywood player overnight through a
bit performance in "Magic Bullet" will
at last achieve his ambition to play
in German in the United States when
Hunter College presents him and his
wife, Elsie Schiff, in series of sketches
from Schiller and Lessing.
Racial attitudes based on ignorance
are hurting the American war effort,
Dean Robert Redfield • of the School of
.
Social Sciences of Chicago University
declared, as he pointed out that "white
men stop work in war industries because
Negroes are employed to work beside
them, and the best man for a wartime
position may be passed over because
he is a Jew."
There has been no "cessation of dis-
crimination against Jews by war manu-
facturers," according to a warning
sounded by Rabbi J. X. Cohen, chairman
of the Commission on Economic Prob-
lems of the American Jewish Congress.
. . . The occasion for Rabbi Cohen's
warning is "the nullification of Presi-
dent Roosevelt's order against discrim-
ination in war industries" through the
dissolution of the Fair Employment
Practice Committee created by Execu-
tive Order 8802.
The Jewish conception of "a just
and durable peace," adopted at the re-
cent Institute at Cincinnati and widely
hailed as a striking exposition of Jewish
liberal views, will be spread through-
out the United States and the world,
it was revealed here by Rabbi Ferdi-
nand M. Isserman, Chairman of the
Commission on Justice and Peace of
the Central Conference of American
Rabbis. The document is to be printed
in a valume and will be available in
a number of languages.

Rabbinical Assembly
Hits Anti-Zionists
NEW YORK (JTA)—The Rab-
binical Assembly of America,
comprising 335 rabbis through-
out the United States, this week
issued a statement declaring
that it "responds with indigna-
tion to the creation of the Amer-
ican Council for Judaism" which
opposes political Zionism."
The. statement which was un-
animously adopted by the As-
sembly's executive council,
accuses the founders of the
American Council for Judaism of
being carried away by their fear
that efforts to achieve majority
status for Jews in Palestine
would be resented as unpatriotic
by American Christians. "Such
fears are not only groundless,
but are an insulting reflection on
the fairness, understanding and
genuine democracy of our Chris-
tian neighbors," the resolution
reads. It emphasizes the need of
Palestine as a Jewish National
Home capable of absorbing mass
immigration of Jews from Eu-
rope after the war.
Refuting the charge that the
effort to establish a Jewish com-
monwealth in Palestine was irre-
ligious because it was secular,
the statement said: "If interest
in the survival of the Jewish
people and its right to a national
life ir. Palestine is secularism,
then the dpro.priets, rabbis, saints
and martyrs of Israel and the
authors of its traditional liturgy
were all of them secularists. The
Zionist movement is for us a
religious movement." The Rab-
binical Assembly is headed by
Rabbi Louis M. Levitsky of
Newark.
