You are not thinking of Passover as
yet, but the Joint Distribution Committee
is . . . It is securing space on ships to
send 500,000 pounds of matzohs to Russia
for Polish Jews there . . . Very few
people in this country know that the
JDC is sending individual food parcels
to Polish Jews in Russia as part of its
refugee relief work . . . Not Only does
the JDC cover the cost of the foodstuffs
sent, but it also pays the custom duty
in advance so as to facilitate the refu-
gees receiving the parcels . . . The food
is bought in Persia and other countries
from where the parcels are mailed . . .
At present, a representative of the JDC
is on his way to India to investigate the
possibilities of buying foodstuffs there
and mailing food parcels from there .. .

Many individual Jews in the United
States whose relatives from Poland are
now in Russia have similarly sent in-
dividual packages to Russia addressing
them to their relatives ... They, however,
did not pay the duty in advance and
the relatives have no money to pay the
duty . . . The parcels are, therefore,
reported to have been detained at the
Persian-Russian station . .. Some 30,000
such packages from individual American
Jews are estimated to awaiting release
by the persons to whom they are ad-
dressed.

WE WONDER ...

"MAKE THIS THE LAST WAR"

Is it true that Lessing J. Rosenwald
resigned as head of the War Production
Board's Conservation Division because he
could not stomach the anti-Semitic pres-
sure prevalent in many Washington offi-
cial circles? . . • In pre-war days, by the
way, Rosenwald was chairman of the
board of the Sears, Roebuck Company,
of which Nelson, now W.P.B. chairman,
was an executive vice president .. . Nel-
son and Rosenwald are close friends, and
the W.P.B. chief is known as a staunch
opponent of all racial and religious pre-
judice-mongering.
We wonder, too, how much credence to
put into the rumors that Secretary of
the Treasury Henry J. Morgenthau, Jr.,
is slated to head a new body that is to
draw up plans for the prevention of a
post-war inflation period not only in this
country but all over the world.

Earnest men are worried. "Make this
the last war," they shout, in the words
of the title chosen by Michael Straight
for his new book.
In the same breath that appeals are
issued to "make this the last war,"
Straight, Pearl Buck and others in their
class are gloomy over the prospects for
the future. "We are losing the war,"
they warn, and it is well that this cry
should be heard now, rather than later,
when the worst possible results of the
present world conflagration have envel-
oped us. .
