mation supplied by the National
Jewish Welfare Board.)

In the Line of Duty

This column salutes the mem-
ory of Laura Libby Cohen, of
Boston, Mass., who died in the
flames during the recent disas-
trous conflagration at the Cocoa-
nut Grove in that city.
Miss Cohen may well be said
to have given her life for her
country in the line of duty. She
worked for the army ordnance
by day, and sold Defense Bonds
and Stamps as a volunteer work-
er at the Cocoanut Club by night.

Jewish Christmas Gifts

A message from Lt. Comman-
der Robert Kelly, of "They Were
Expendable" fame, interrupted a
luncheon meeting of Greater New
York area chaplains recently.
Kelly wanted to know if the
chaplains could scare up 200
Christmas gifts inside 24 hours.
He was taking a mosquito-boat
squadron to sea, and since land
would be nowhere in sight on
Christmas Day, he wanted to have
a little something on board to
surprise his men. A Jewish chap-
lain left the gathering and called
the National Jewish Welfare
Board. When Lt. Commander
Kelly's squadron put out to sea
on the following day, 200 gifts
were in Kelly's cabin, ready for
distribution on the 25th. The
Jewish Welfare` Board's Victory
Kit Workshop, headed by Mrs.
Chariles Bernheim and made up
of volunteer women, had worked
all night getting the gifts ready.

Scrap from Tokio
-
A Japanese saber nearly four
feet long, slightly curved and
covered with Japanese engraving,
with a hilt of mother-of-pearl, ar-
rived in the mail this week as a
gift to the Abady family in Rich-
mond, Va., from their son, Lieu-
tenant Herman Abady, recuperat-
ing in a marine hospital on
Guadalcanal from a gunshot
wound in his left leg.
Herman himself originally got
the saber as a gift—from the men
in his outfit, after an attack
against the Japs in Guadalcanal
last August.
Accompanying the saber were
some Japanese cigarettes and Jap-
anese money, the possession of
which seems slightly embarrass-
ing to the Abady's, although
they're ready to turn the saber
over to the A.R.P. headquarters
in Richmond as their contribu-
tion to the scrap metal drive.

He Lost His Stripes

When Dave Zinkoff, formerly
a corporal, emerged from Signal
Corps Officers' School in Louisi-
ana recently as a full-fledged
Lieutenant, the only comment he
could get out of the first friend he
met was, "So you lost your
stripes, eh, Zink?"
